𝗔𝗿𝘁 focuses on the beauty of forms and the interplay of elements such as lines, shapes, and colours. Its primary aim is to express thoughts, emotions, and perspectives without necessarily serving a functional purpose. It’s about creating for the sake of expression and evoking a response. On the other hand, 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗰 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻, while also dealing with lines, shapes, and colours, applies these elements to achieve specific objectives. It’s a purposeful discipline aimed at solving problems, influencing behaviour, or conveying strategic messages, often in service of business or communication goals. While one can embody both roles, it’s essential to recognize that you can not be both simultaneously, barely. When creating to express emotions and ideas, you are an artist. As someone who has been in the design industry for quite a few years now, I’ve learned a thing or two along the way. Whether you’re self-taught, fresh graduate, or transitioning from another career path to design, crafting a distinguished portfolio is key to getting a design job. Here are some of my tips for crafting a portfolio recruiters would want to see. 1. Only show your best work: Recruiters want to see quality over quantity. Even if your best work includes 2 designs, put it in your portfolio. 2. Consistency: While designing your portfolio website, make sure to maintain a consistent look and theme of your website. Use few colors and typography. One tip- if you’re using a serif typeface, complement it with a sans serif typeface. 3. Testimonials matters: Add testimonials to your case studies to show social proof and the credibility of your work. 4. Niche down: When you’re starting out, it’s better to niche down. Serve one type of client at a time. For example, “I design landing pages for startups with over $1M in ARR.” 5. Storytelling: Probably the only reason recruiters would read your entire case study. Your case study should include 3 main storytelling components- process, challenges, and solutions. Remember, keep your portfolio as concise as possible. #design #portfolio #designer
