As we learn more, we have become concerned about the accuracy of labels that come from Western entities and are placed on commodities produced in the Global South. Due to the absence of truly being able to verify this information in the realm of Fair Trade, navigating this terrain with confidence becomes slightly more difficult. Unfortunately, we cannot provide a statement that we fully trust Fair Trade. Learn more about the issues within fair-trade chocolate and coffee here: https://buff.ly/2RT0DMW

The next post is actually a bit of a rant, so if you work for a trade association then maybe this post is not for you. Over the last couple of weeks we've sat with a range of companies, who in one way or another are hamstrung by qualifications that are not fit for purpose. Now many of these have been developed and are owned by trade associations who have sat on their hands for years with a standard which was fit for purpose once but not any more. They are either unwilling (more likely) or unable to bring their standard up to date. As a result we have companies having to go through a standard which they feel is not up to date but have to tick the box. All this does is cost them money whilst not really providing much in the way of value to them. What we'd like to understand is how many other trades are suffering the same? So, please comment below if you feel the same and explain how and why your standard needs to be updated to meet your company's requirement? Thanks in advance. Grant Hamilton

Our own Jersey Channel Island Ministers should listen to this interview. I forecasted 17 years ago that Jersey excise duty had been rising way too much, which elevates the suppliers prices, then likewise our retailers then increase each year. Note how many hotels have closed in the last 17 years. Jersey between 1980 - 1997 used to be apx 33% cheaper for alcohol than the mainland and Europe, today the swing is the other way around. Look how much money our government have actually lost, rather than gained by implementing excise duty increases every year.
A #ScotchWhisky highball contains less alcohol than a pint of beer or cider, but is taxed up to x 4️⃣ more - that is neither fair nor consistent with the government's own alcohol consumption guidelines. Good to have the opportunity to explain why Chancellor Jeremy Hunt should cut duty on spirits and #SupportScotch in next week's HM Treasury Budget on TalkTV
