Was E.F. Schumacher right about the need to redesign the ownership of larger businesses? I too have observed that as a business grows, it becomes more important to redesign its ownership. The larger a business gets, the more likely it is to become: 🌐 disconnected from its impacts - its decisions impact multiple places far from senior management 💪 more powerful vis-a-vis its workers, suppliers, communities, customers... and the relationships become formalised, distant & negotiated 💲 forced to optimise for financial returns by their investors ...and as a result of all this, less able to prioritise social or ecological goals. Small businesses aren't necessarily more sustainable or fair. But the above is particularly prevalent among larger businesses. Great to see the employee-owned Scott Bader on Schumacher's radar as a positive example over half a century ago. They're still going strong. So wonderful that Schumacher Center for a New Economics, Schumacher College, The Schumacher Institute & other institutions continue to develop and share the ideas of E.F. Schumacher.
