Celebrating 55-60: The Years I Decided My Age Won't Define My Financial Boundaries. 15 February, I turn 60 years of age. In the past 5 years, I’ve earned more income than I did over the past 10 years combined. Here’s what I’ve learned in this season: 1. Too Rich or Poor for Some Christians: In this defining decade, I learned that wealth isn't just about accumulation but about the wisdom to navigate its moral complexities. It's about understanding that my financial blessings are not a barrier to faith but a means to serve more generously and live more fully. 2. Earn Attention vs. Access: The power of attention has become more valuable than ever. I've shifted from seeking (face to face) access to earning attention (at scale) for my insights and experiences. It's not just about who you know but about who values what you know. [Med Tech, my industry, is selling and marketing like it’s 1994 and 90% are content with business as usual] 3. What Got You to a 100k Will Not Get You to a Million: This era taught me the importance of scaling not just my investments but my mindset. The strategies and habits that brought me initial success were just the foundation. To reach the next level, it was about diversifying not just my portfolio but also my approach to wealth creation. 4. Push/Pull. Never Want to Carry Someone Else's Quota or Depend Upon a Pay Raise/Promotion: Independence and self-sufficiency became my mantras. I refused to be tethered to the expectations or performance metrics of others. Building streams of passive income, investing in personal growth, and pursuing entrepreneurial endeavors ensured that my financial progress was mine to control, not at the mercy of corporate ladders or market whims. 5. Embrace Temporary Season of Discomfort: Comfort zones are wealth's greatest enemy. These years have been about embracing discomfort—whether it's learning new technologies, investing in unfamiliar markets, or even enduring financial lows. Each discomfort was a stepping stone to greater resilience and wealth. It's through these challenges that I've found new opportunities and growth paths. Celebrating this milestone age has been an empowering affirmation that age is merely a number, not a limit. It's a time rich with potential, ripe for reinvention, and bursting with opportunities to redefine what financial freedom means. It's a reminder that the best chapters of our financial story can indeed begin at 55-60, crafted with wisdom, boldness, and a forward-looking vision.
Happy Early Birthday, Matthew! May this next chapter be filled with even more opportunities for reinvention, growth, and continued success. Here's to the next exciting decade of embracing more discomfort and the limitless possibilities it holds!
