Over the past 12 months, the unemployment rate hasn't aligned with the realities of the private sector job market. Many job seekers are understandably frustrated, questioning why unemployment figures remain so low despite their challenges in finding work. A recent report offers some insights: as of June, Australia had 2,517,900 public sector employees, according to the ABS. This includes: 365,400 federal government employees 1,939,100 state government employees 213,500 local council employees This means more than 17% of the total workforce (14,402,500 in June) is employed in the public sector. Understanding these numbers can shed light on why the unemployment rate doesn’t always reflect the experiences of private sector job seekers.

Matthew Crossley Reason is very simple. Unemployment rate index is skewed by government definition of "unemployment " which masks a lot of underemployment & creation of contract work in government sector.

Great post Matthew Crossley Been thinking of doing a post on this myself, but you nailed it,
