My thoughts quoted in Inside AI Policy on the GOP's stated intent to repeal the Biden AI Executive order and instead, in their words, "support AI Development rooted in Free Speech and Human Flourishing." “Matt Mittelsteadt, also of Mercatus, said of EO repeal " The question is: what replaces it? The previous Trump administration pursued a light touch approach, but the AI context of 2020 is a far cry from 2024. While it's unclear what AI development promoting ‘human flourishing’ might mean to the Trump camp, known Trump policy priorities such as expanded tariffs, expanded border controls and a general ‘America first’ attitude could put the American AI industry at a competitive disadvantage and slow AI innovation and investment.” https://lnkd.in/dEG3C29X

Paul Scharre and I write in TIME about Washington's unique dilemma for AI regulation: how to secure America's position as the global AI leader, while protecting Americans from AI’s possible risks? Although any country seeking to regulate AI must balance regulation and innovation, this task is especially hard for the United States because we arguably have more to lose. U.S. firms dominate AI, propelled by our uniquely open innovation ecosystem. And if AI proves the game-changer that many expect, surrendering U.S. leadership is not an option. But neither is leaving the technology completely unregulated, as Washington did with social media. Striking this regulatory balance won't be easy, and as Congress considers AI legislation, we offer four broad lessons. https://lnkd.in/eEVNP5Ne

If you were holding your breath for federal AI regulation - don't. Senator Warner of Virginia stated that everyone agrees regulations are necessary but "They all say they want regulation until you put words on a page.” He also references trying to find a middle ground between the EU AI Act and doing nothing: “I am deeply engaged with a lot of these companies. I’m saying, ‘You guys have got to be for something.’ Now, do you do what the Europeans have overdone? We’ve done nothing. There is somewhere in the middle [for], I think, smart regulation." Accordingly, I believe we are likely to see the patchwork state-by-state regulation of AI continue for the foreseeable future. https://lnkd.in/eVZwJ8-p
