Thanks to everyone who came to the annual Utah Chapter meeting for the American Statistical Association. Special thanks to our panelists Shannon Tass, Thomas Kerby, Andrew Christensen and Dave Hedengren. We had some great discussion on the impact of AI on the field of data science and statistics. Some of my favorite thoughts from the evening: 1. Excel didn't remove the need for accountants. AI isn't going to remove the need for data scientists. But, it will change what skills we need and what we provide to the professional environment. 2. You need to treat AI like we do multiplication. We spend time in elementary school learning the fundamentals of multiplication and doing it by hand. But, after we understand it, we use the computer to do multiplication. We need to still learn coding by doing it "by hand". But, after we understand what the code is doing, we lean on AI to code for us. 3. I'm old because I still use stack overflow 😅
