"Break the Monotony Day" has come in a timely fashion, as we're attempting to be a little more adventurous with our advertising and marketing. Good taste is table stakes. Technical skills and strategic thinking are what make a great creative. Unpopular opinion: Rick Rubin is a phony. This clip has been circling the internet for a while now but it never fails to irk me. It’s great that you feel confident in your taste, but expertise is honed through hard work and the ability to articulate what gives creative work integrity. Gurus are not born, they’re made. — A friend recently asked for advice on behalf of his boyfriend, who has no experience but wants to break into creative and marketing. My answer: start making stuff! We all have to start somewhere and if you think that you’ve got an innate talent for visual communication, prove it! Don’t wait for permission, just jump into the Adobe suite and start learning the tools, own your craft, and prove to a potential new employer that you’ve got the goods. While my college education did a great job of teaching me design rhetoric, it did not teach me the technical skills I use day-in and day-out as a working creative director. I self-started initiatives to teach myself the skills I needed to get my foot in the door and have continued to learn on the job for the past 12 years. Good taste is the starting point, not the finish line, and backing up your creative sense with hard skills is what separates creators from hacks.

YouTube is REALLY missing the mark! How does presenting in-video advertisements benefit people other than the advertiser? How are you not giving a sour taste or bad rap to the advertiser as "the" interrupter of a user's experience? I know someone who "throws" something in my face, while perhaps remembered, is way less likely to get my business! Case: - User accesses a video in one of multiple ways; in this case, let's say it is an instructional video on youtube.com. - The user must first watch an ad, possibly two at a time, to first get to the content they are trying to access. - The user watches the video to gain insights on proper techniques, processes, etc. - User is INTERRUPTED with in-video advertisement, not once, not twice, but four+ times in the process of the 30-minute video. How is this serving your viewing audience with a GOOD USER EXPERIENCE? Please enlighten me!

In this new campaign, Z-Sides Press shall pummel the average American citizen's eyeballs like the bunch of true communications professionals we are, except this time not in the name of some vain, half-literate, sorry excuse for a slogan intended to wrench hard-earned dollars from the pockets of everyday Americans by selling them the illusion of convenience through technology. No! This time we'll put our marketing acumen to work on a cause that ACTUALLY MATTERS, instead of puffing ourselves up on talk of how we're helping the world by creating a new notification icon with which to interrupt the forward progress of society's true contributors. The strength of this marketing campaign resides in its simplicity. Given that we’re all complicit in using language to nudge our intended audiences towards the actions we want them to take on behalf of our corporate imperatives, we should have no problem at all persuading free-thinking American citizens that IT’S COOL TO PUNK A NAZI!! That’s right, we're just going to tell people it's cool to punk a nazi over and over again until it really sticks in the brains of the impressionable kids, youknowwhatImean? It should be easier than ever this time, since we’ve had almost 100 years at this point of their foul nazi-stench permeating our education system, our board rooms, and our government, with which to gird our aggregate loins for battle. Hey, if we’re smart enough to convince people that Subaru is Love, then we can damn sure teach them it’s cool to punk a nazi!! (And boy oh boy have we dredged up one of the OSR toe-tappin’ classics with which to soundtrack our top-notch wordsmithery!) Combine this fun, family-friendly activity with other forms of wordplay like the 'in bed' game. You know the 'in bed' game - it's a favorite of MBA's everywhere. That's where you tack the phrase 'in bed' to the end of an original statement someone else has made, and consider yourself clever for it. Let's try a few variations to demonstrate how, by combining these two simple (or is that too simple?) rhetorical devices, you can put together what we call in the business, a proposal with real legs: It's cool to punk a nazi. It's cool to punk a nazi! IT'S COOL TO PUNK A NAZI!! It's cool to punk a nazi (in bed). It's cool to punk a nazi (at work). It's cool to punk a nazi (in the street). Public service announcement: If your business name includes “365,” there is a segment of your target audience that will immediately convert that to “3-6-9” and recall this little jam from Lil’ Jon. Why? Because our brains are set to autopilot and we’re always looking for a reason to recall it. Marketing language is important. And understanding words’ meaning to you is valuable. But also understanding how they can possibly be interpreted or misinterpreted is essential. My favorite question to ask my German colleagues is “is this English for America, or the world?” Anticipating the best, and the worst, ensures that you avoid unintended negative connotations. VIDEO, Entertainment and Business Concept. The artist, entertainer, and Orchestra Leader as Content Creator. Or they have a Creative Director, like some companies do. I this video, and other videos too, you get music, real life photos, and paintings, as well as Entertainment all together. There is a business takeaway to it. And the best Content Creators do it. My Marketing career started off with big laughs from every single one of my Marketing professors and they told me that they loved it. They had never seen any of their students put together and combine two very unrelated things to make a Marketing case. Well, you do it with making a business case too, I used to combine all kinds of different photos with business content, had come up with the idea of doing so, and still do so.
