Last week, we presented the Urban Education Report titled "Access to Quality Education for Children Living in Urban, Poor Informal Settlements in Uganda" in Kampala, #Uganda. The study focused on households in 42 villages with school-going children aged 3 to 19 in urban informal settlements in Kampala and Mukono. It aimed to understand schooling patterns among children living in urban poor households in Uganda, including those with special needs, the communities' perceptions of education as a right in the context of urbanization, and the educational opportunities available for children with special needs and those from poor urban households. I was homeschooled from 3rd to 11th grade, and when I returned to school in 11th grade, I experienced bullying—from the teachers. My classmates, on the other hand, were very supportive and DID NOT bully me, unlike the adult educators. If, at that time in 11th grade, there had been a participant from Teach For Qazaqstan I feel like they definitely wouldn’t have bullied me. Teach For Qazaqstan embodies my childhood desire for social justice. This program aims to reduce educational inequality. By selecting, training, and supporting specialists from various fields willing to dedicate two years to teaching in regional schools, Teach for Qazaqstan seeks to address the teacher shortage in Kazakhstan (over 4,000 teachers are needed). Population growth and uneven funding create some shocking statistics. Kazakhstan has over 7,600 schools, 80% of which are rural, yet 56% of children attend urban schools. I met Gulnara Salmen during the @beginit.indrive.ca bootcamp in March 2024. Of course, I already knew about the project and supported it, but hearing Gulnara talk about it changed my perspective completely. Entrepreneurs, take note. A brief conversation yesterday deeply inspired me and sparked many thoughts. I wish them success, and the most heartwarming thing is that the first schools to adopt the project were rural schools in Karaganda. The professionals who became teachers are already teaching. *Etam SSS in Amolatar District Designated as Seed School in Lango Sub-region* Amolatar, Uganda - June 10, 2024 In a move to bolster education in the Lango sub-region, the Ugandan government has confirmed that Etam Secondary School in Amolatar District will be designated as a seed school. This designation is part of the government's broader effort to strengthen the education system across the country. As a seed school, Etam SSS will serve as a model institution, with the aim of improving educational outcomes and infrastructure in the surrounding areas. The school will receive additional support and resources from the government to enhance its facilities, teaching staff, and overall learning environment. Commenting on the development, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Sports stated, "Etam SSS has been selected as a seed school due to its proven track record of academic excellence and its strategic location within the Lango sub-region. By investing in this institution, we hope to raise the bar for secondary education and inspire other schools in the area to follow suit." In a related announcement, the Ugandan government has also revealed plans to recruit an additional 2,500 teachers nationwide. This initiative is aimed at addressing the shortage of qualified educators, particularly in rural and underserved areas, and ensuring that students across the country have access to quality education.
