I had to watch this video several times to reflect on it. It reinforces what I feel in my gut - we need to always be building for tomorrow, not for today. And it points to a potential blind alley in product development and AI adoption. Betting on the evolution of AI models isn’t just wise - it’s essential. It may seem safe to build for today’s capabilities, adding vertically and functionally tailored features around what the models can do today. That’s also a good path to obsolescence. Ken Olsen, founder of Digital Equipment Corp, is famous for his 1977 quote “There is no reason anyone would want a computer in their home.” If you’re old enough to have used a mainframe computer in 1977…well, he was right... But he was betting against evolution. He was betting against Moore’s Law, as computers doubled in power every two years. And with that increase in power came decreases in price, driving adoption in the home and business markets. We don’t talk about Moore’s Law much now for computers, but it remains true. It’s just less relevant as the industry has reached maturity. Startups that hinge their future on static AI capabilities risk obsolescence when the next generation of frontier models, like GPT-5, emerge (supposedly in the next month). Because AI is nowhere near maturity. The strategic foresight to anticipate improvements in AI can transform a business trajectory. It's about seeing beyond the current capabilities—envisioning and gearing up for what's coming. Companies that ask, "How can we lead and redefine our industry based on where AI is going?" are the ones that will thrive, adapting rapidly to leverage new advancements for better solutions.
