Carnival in Basel. Embracing the beauty and richness of differences and make them your own. Fasnacht in Basel kicked off yesterday at 4 am. Mystic and enchanting. In the midst of quietness, the tones of flutes filling up the air. No one speaks, only music and lights. The brass bands play another tone today. They will create a lively, joyful and rhythmic atmosphere. Before calling Basel home, I was unaware of this tradition, much like many others I’ve come to cherish during my time living abroad. Reflecting on my journey through various countries, I’ve realized how each location has not only broadened my horizons but also reshaped my perspective on “the others” and my own cultural identity. Habits which were so common, aren’t that automatic anymore. What did I learn from living abroad? ✅ Be prepared for the unexpected. Craft plan A, B and C. Be patient, creative and go with the flow. Dutch directness is appreciated but don’t overdo it. ✅ Accept the invitation. Locals love to share the beautiful, wonderful and unknown places of their country. Be curious and open minded. ✅ Adaptation is essential. It’s equally important to remain authentic. Each new encounter, each unfamiliar custom, enriches your backpack of experiences. Be selective to what you want to keep and what is better to let go! ✅ Letting go of preconceived notions and stereotypes. It’s limiting and avoids experiencing the richness each culture has to offer. Just as Italians eat more than just spaghetti, I don’t go only around only on my bicycle and wooden shoes. I am curious to your experiences. I spent 8 days solo travelling in Italy 🇮🇹 Here’s 8 reasons to do it Back on June, I decided to do my first solo trip 🧭 I could say it was because I wanted to know me better, or grow personally… But I just wanted to I can’t tell you why 🤷 I thought: ‘why not? Let’s try this…’🤔 I write here a lot about teamwork and team management. But I realized that some experiences, work, projects… Must be lived/made by oneself Because… 1️⃣ You create something suited to you 2️⃣ Once you get over that first feeling of doubt, you trust yourself more 3️⃣ You force yourself to do things you don’t usually do 4️⃣ You learn to trust your gut 5️⃣ You have more freedom 6️⃣ You solve your own problems 7️⃣ You meet new people 8️⃣ You go through a lot of introspection And yes… there is personal development 🧘 ( I know it sounds cliché, but it’s true ) Have you ever tried it? 🌍✈️ Reflecting on my short European Journey: A Path to International Growth 🌟 As I reminisce about my recent first trip to Europe, I can't help but feel a surge of gratitude for the enriching experiences and invaluable connections made along the way. From the bustling streets of London to the charming canals of Amsterdam, the romantic ambiance of Paris, and the vibrant energy of Lisbon, each city left an indelible mark on my journey towards an international career shift. Exploring these culturally-rich destinations with my family not only created unforgettable memories but also reaffirmed my passion for embracing new horizons and embracing diverse perspectives. Amidst the breathtaking landscapes and iconic landmarks, I realized that my path to professional growth necessitated immersing myself in the essence of European culture. One particular revelation stood out amidst my travels: a profound sense of belonging that I experienced in the Netherlands. Something I have never had before in my entire life. The warmth of the Dutch culture and the genuine connections forged during my time there ignited a spark within me, signaling a pivotal moment in my pursuit of international opportunities. On the other hand, I had a heartwarming meeting with my childhood friend Fernanda Lima who gave me some special gifts. Thanks a bunch, Nanda, for the kindest hours you provided me. Well…Two train journeys, four cities, five flights, seven airports, fifteen days. Three dreams came true: my son’s, my wife’s, and mine. Gratitude for the wonderful days we had together. I’m a supporter of international and interstate acts staging events and touring Western Australia - it's an important part of the entertainment offering. But a question that comes to mind. Has WA built an events/tourism/arts culture that relies too much on importing talent/events instead of creating and nurturing its own? Would that not make for a far more compelling tourism product? Something that is unique to our state, and cannot be easily replicated by another. In my experience dealing with some decision-makers and departments in WA, there seems to be a bit of a lack of confidence when it comes to believing our WA talent and creators can do it. This culture in many cases leads to our most talented creative people leaving the state for opportunities in other cities (But when they crack it elsewhere - we are more than happy to take ownership of them LOL). I would love to see more major events that were created in Western Australia instead of throwing money at securing major events that were created elsewhere to prop up our Tourism and events industry. It's all about getting the balance right - a nice mix of touring and locally produced major events. #westernaustralia
