It was a pleasure to connect with the incredible team from #BatteryAssociates - Melanie Griff, Dr. Simon Engelke, and Barath Venkatesan, Sharbani Sengupta - at the booth, discussing #BatteryMBA, company membership and other exciting services. Beyond the networking, I immersed myself in panel discussions and presentations. Thank you Nicolas F. 𝗠𝘆 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 1️⃣ 𝙔𝙤𝙪𝙩𝙝 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙙𝙮𝙣𝙖𝙢𝙞𝙨𝙢 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙗𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙮 Still in its early stages, with short, frequent innovation cycles—a trend likely to continue 2️⃣ 𝙍𝙚𝙜𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙨𝙚 𝙜𝙖𝙥𝙨 While Asia dominates the battery value chain, European and US players are gaining ground, and Asian suppliers are expanding globally. 3️⃣ 𝙄𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙜𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙨 Combining machinery and equipment from diverse suppliers remains complex, especially during early project stages. Advanced simulations and supplier data will become increasingly vital. 4️⃣ 𝙀𝙫𝙤𝙡𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙗𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙩𝙚𝙘𝙝𝙣𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙜𝙮 Changing technology will drive DFM/DFA in batteries, and equipment will need to adapt quickly to changes within a defined bandwidth for mass production. Teams will need more agility. 5️⃣ 𝙏𝙖𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙖𝙜𝙚𝙨 Skill gaps highlight the need for multidisciplinary expertise and re-skilling or up-skilling professionals from related industries. 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗶𝗴𝗮𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 High investment costs and unpredictable ramp-up challenges are unsustainable. Future gigafactories must 𝙛𝙤𝙘𝙪𝙨 𝙤𝙣 𝙛𝙡𝙚𝙭𝙞𝙗𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 through: 𝙁𝙖𝙨𝙩 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚: In a rapidly evolving industry, yesterday’s expertise can quickly become obsolete. Fostering an agile mindset, while maintaining a structured cross-industry learning approach to planning, building, running, and adapting gigafactory production, will be crucial for both organizations and individuals. 𝘿𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙜𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙚: Cross-functional collaboration and early planning must prioritize the integration of diverse machinery, equipment, logistics, and IT infrastructure. This will enable seamless production from raw materials to finished products, pre-maturing of processes and tools for ramp-up, and support long-term adaptability. 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 The gigafactory of the future isn’t just a facility—it’s part of a dynamic ecosystem built to evolve alongside battery technology. The Worshipful Company of Carmen, on the theme of sustainability, are pleased to share a post below 👇 by Nico Rosberg, Founder of Rosberg Ventures, 2016 F1 World Champion, Sustainability Entrepreneur, Angel Investor Imagine a world where your car charges while you drive. That's not science fiction: it's happening now with the development of electrified roads. Sweden is already testing these roads, which could reduce private EV battery sizes by up to 70%, and the U.S. is planning its first electrified highway in Detroit. My partner EnBW is also leading the way by testing wireless charging for electric buses in collaboration with ElectReon. Their test track in Karlsruhe uses induction coils embedded in the pavement to charge buses while they move, and by 2030, the government aims for 50% of all buses in Germany to be electric- so this would be great! However, inductive charging does have some challenges, like the need for precise vehicle positioning to ensure efficient charging. There are also concerns about stray magnetic fields, which require careful management to keep things safe. With EnBW's HyperNetz already offering access to 700,000 charging points in 17 countries, we're seeing major strides in infrastructure. China's EV are going to eat the Mass Market woldwide💡… This week I visited #Shenzhen, China's Silicon Valley, and was struck by the silence on the street. Over 40% of the city's vehicles are #electric! China's #EV journey is fascinating, fueled by several key factors: 1️⃣ Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory: Assembled in just 1 year in 2019 , at that time looked big win for Elon Musk, but it strategically positioned China to acquire EV expertise and build a strong domestic supplier ecosystem. 2️⃣ Massive Domestic Market: With +1.5 billion people and a growing affluent class, China boasts a huge internal market for EVs, making a very competitive environment that foster innovation. 3️⃣Government Support: China incentiviced EV development, making them a viable solution for big city pollution issues, and becoming a powerhouse on EV (China missed the combustion engine car manufacturing, but strategically did not missed EV) 3️⃣ From Copycats to Tech Leaders: China's established electronics manufacturing giants like Huawei, Hiense, Haier, Oppo, etc. are leveraging their expertise in hardware, software, and scale. They're no longer just copycats; they're leading the way in high-end technology. And think about Software companies, with Byte dance world player. This shift positions EVs as tech products, not just combustion engine replacements. Where we are ? ➡️ Dominating the Global EV Market “China currently holds 60% share of the global EV market, with its domestic market alone accounting for over 30% – compared to the US at 11%. ➡️Europe's Lagging Innovation: The picture in Europe isn't as rosy. With a limited number of European brands offering EVs, the continent seems to be falling behind in innovation. While once leading the world, Europe now risks losing ground in the mass market. ➡️Shenzhen woldl capital of EV’s : A Showroom for Chinese EVs. Walking through Shenzhen, you're surrounded by showrooms of competing Chinese EV brands. They're attracting top designers, developing cutting-edge technology, and leveraging their vast domestic market to test, scale, and then export competitively priced vehicles. ➡️ Elon Musk himself acknowledged the threat for his brand, stating in this January in an earning call "they will pretty much demolish most other companies in the world" if trade barriers aren't established. Tesla's stock price has even dropped 30% significantly since January. The Future of Mass Market EVs. While established European brands may focus on luxury segment (analogy of luxury watches) and Tesla and maybe Korean brands will have market share, the mass market for EVs seems destined to be dominated by Chinese manufacturers. Looks like this unfolding competitive landscape will get us to net-zero targets much sooner than anticipated. The aim of replacing every #ICE with an #EV in a decade's time is a monumental opportunity and, I believe the pie is huge enough to feed every one in the ecosystem. Apart from the #EV, the #BESS sector is still to unfold; so far it's riding on the back of #EV sector. Having said that, once the market has reached a maturity point where the technology has become a plug-and-play, the competition will be solely around price; and, if the labour is the main cost-component, Europe wouldn't be able to compete with China or the developing world. Even if the Europe has woken up earlier with a long-term strategy in place, this moment was inevitable, I believe. If we focus on #Technology #Innovation rather than competing in volume manufacturing, we have a better chance to secure our position.

🔋 ☕ Pausefika news: Britishvolt, Italvolt, Northvolt… Are European-rooted battery factory initiatives doomed to fail? 🔋 While European startups struggle to scale their gigafactory dreams, outsiders from the U.S. (Tesla Berlin Gigafactory: https://lnkd.in/drMygbbU) and Asia (via joint ventures) seem to succeed. The facility will produce low-cost LFP (lithium iron phosphate) batteries for Stellantis’ automotive plants—a critical step in advancing EV adoption in Europe. This collaboration between Stellantis and CATL stands in stark contrast to the struggles of European initiatives like Britishvolt.
