Concrete is essential to our built environment, with over four tonnes used every year for every person alive on the planet. Cement, its binder, contributes 7.5% of global carbon emissions - triple that of aviation. 🏭 Cambridge Electric Cement (CEC) has developed a technology to recycle cement from demolition waste. Their innovation replaces lime flux in steel recycling with recovered cement paste, which produces a low carbon, cement clinker without affecting steelmaking. Founded in the University's Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge by Professor Julian Allwood, Dr Cyrille Dunant and Dr Philippa Horton, their discovery matches the performance of Portland cement.
