The statistics are sobering: One in five engineers has tragically lost a colleague to suicide, and over a fifth have grappled with taking time off due to mental health concerns. Particularly, 'invisible' disabilities pose unique challenges when it comes to seeking support in the workplace. It's crucial to recognise that depression has risen to become the leading global cause of ill health and disability. As our last post as part of Men's Mental Health month we're sharing the recording of our webinar last year where Andy Bishop shared his personal journey and experiences, emphasising the importance of continuous dialogue surrounding mental health. His insights will be will be invaluable in our quest to foster a supportive and understanding environment within the engineering community. The effects of internet engagement on psychological health is becoming increasingly relevant. Decreasing screentime without negatively impacting social and occupational functioning is becoming increasingly difficult. Come and join me as I give a talk on maintaining psychological well-being in the digital age by discussing how internet engagement changes the way we think. I will also be paying specific attention to how the development of our children and teenagers are affected, and the contributions of engagement with cyberspace to future societal mental health problems.

Assimilation in BIPOC communities can profoundly impact mental health. As individuals strive to adapt to dominant cultural norms, they may face identity conflicts, discrimination, and the pressure to conform, leading to stress and anxiety. The loss of cultural heritage and support systems can exacerbate feelings of isolation and depression. Moreover, systemic racism and microaggressions in everyday life further contribute to mental health struggles. Culturally sensitive mental health services and community support are essential to address these challenges. Recognizing and validating diverse cultural identities can help BIPOC individuals maintain their mental well-being while navigating the complexities of assimilation. #BIPOCmentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #breakingthestigma

🧠 Rethinking Mental Health: Beyond the 'Disorder' Paradigm Since the 1980s, we've been led to believe that emotional suffering primarily stems from 'mental disorders.' This perspective suggests that our pain is a result of something inherently wrong within us, rather than acknowledging the unmet social, psychological, and relational needs that could be driving it. But let’s pause and reflect: Has there ever been a time in history when this belief was so dominant? And yet, despite its prevalence, mental health disabilities have only increased. Could it be that we’re overlooking the true root causes of our emotional struggles? What if we shifted the focus from labelling individuals to addressing the broader issues at play—like societal pressures, lack of community, and unmet human connections? Maybe then, we could pave the way for a more compassionate and holistic approach to mental health. It's time to question the status quo and explore new avenues for supporting well-being. Let’s start the conversation.

Mental health encompasses a state of well-being that empowers individuals to navigate life's challenges, recognize their strengths, thrive academically and professionally, and contribute positively to society. It holds both intrinsic and instrumental value, playing a crucial role in our overall wellness. Various factors, ranging from personal to societal, can either bolster or hinder mental health resilience. While many individuals demonstrate resilience, those confronted with adverse conditions such as poverty, violence, disability, or inequality face heightened vulnerability to mental health disorders. Despite the effectiveness of cost-efficient treatments for numerous mental health conditions, global health systems often grapple with inadequate resources, resulting in substantial treatment disparities. Additionally, the quality of mental health care delivery frequently falls short, compounded by pervasive stigma, discrimination, and infringements on human rights experienced by individuals with mental health disorders. #MentalHealth #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth
