My latest for Fierce Network: WISPs typically use fiber backhaul to service tower locations or antenna sites, but getting access that backhaul is tricky. LOGIX Fiber Networks has a lot of fiber, and it says it can help WISPs by offering both 5G rooftop access and fiber backhaul. WISPs are also more interested in deploying fiber broadband, thanks to BEAD and other government funding sources floating around. https://lnkd.in/eGEqCWKN

As mobile network operators (#MNOs) are looking at fiber in the middle mile to provide the transport for their fixed wireless access (#FWA) initiatives leveraging their licensed spectrum, WISPs are looking at utilizing unlicensed spectrum to serve their enterprise and residential customers with FWA. This article provides a good read on how fiber and wireless technologies are being relied upon for a converged network to address the most difficult “last mile” connectivity. Ultimately, to bridge the digital divide in a cost-effective and efficient manner, wireless in the last mile is a great option. And, on our part, our #multibeam #lensantennas are optimized for the last-mile in dense-urban, suburban and rural macro networks as the focus is on delivering digital equity effectively. Cable providers mix tech for broadband Fiber has become part of the broadband mix for at least a third of cable providers, an Omdia survey shows, as 51.1% of homes now can access fiber-based internet. Companies like Mediacom Communications are even using fixed wireless access to supply rural areas with connectivity.

The Federal Communications Commission's decision to allocate parts of the 6GHz spectrum band for shared use could provide some benefit to WISPs. However, the entrance of larger wireless carriers and cable providers into the fixed-wireless access market presents new challenges. Adapting their strategies, some WISPs are deploying fiber infrastructure or implementing a hybrid approach. To truly set themselves apart, delivering exceptional broadband experiences and nurturing subscriber loyalty are crucial. Great article on deployment costs and BEAD. Fiber is always going to be the best option for high speed broadband, unless the price is just too high. Wireless and satellite have their applications where they make sense, especially in an area where fiber deployments will cost upward of $15,000 per passing or higher.

For the past few years, we’ve all read about the big 3 mobile operators competing against incumbent broadband providers for a piece of the $1 billion home broadband market. This week, Light Reading senior editor Jeff Baumgartner covers how rural operators are using their fixed wireless access networks to “edge-in” to urban markets to compete for their share of the #FWA pie. Speaking on a Light Reading – Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers webinar, Nextlink Internet CEO Bill Baker explained that FWA costs are low and unlike fiber, FWA deployments into urban regions “don’t need 30 to 40% market share for it to make sense financially. They need 2%, 1.5%...it’s a totally different ballgame economically on the fixed wireless side.” Pivotal’s take? There’s plenty of FWA broadband demand to go around for all wireless providers. Welcome to the FWA party, rural colleagues! Read Jeff’s article here: https://bit.ly/4atODbl #5G #mmWave
