Let's talk about paying workers a living wage. Specifically baristas. One of my favorite coffee shops here in Austin recently jacked up their prices. And I mean jacked them up. I paid $9.74 for a latte this morning. I didn't do it because I thought it was worth it, I just wanted the receipt. I got to chatting with one of the baristas who explained to me that management decided to change its menu before #sxsw (convenient timing, if I dare say so myself). They did this to begin compensating its workers a living wage. While there are some good definitions about what a living wage should look like -- Massachusetts Institute of Technology has built an entire dataset around this -- there are problems with how work is classified, and thus, what a living wage actually means. This raises an important question: should every worker be compensated equitably even if their value in the economy is far greater than others? Here's my full take: https://lnkd.in/gdKisgtF

🎱 Politics and your favorite pub special—two things you may want to avoid mixing. But with election season brewing, it’s hard to stay out of the fray, especially with issues that might shake up the restaurant biz. What’s on the ballot this year? A few juicy topics that could tip the balance for tipped wages and beyond. Think: the tipped minimum wage, where the fate of the service industry may depend on the votes. Some places are holding tight, while others, like Massachusetts, are considering leveling up to $15. Arizona’s considering something a bit different—a more conservative approach to base pay with tip incentives. Let’s just say, there’s a lot to unpack this election. So, who’s ready to dive into the details? Get the full scoop here from our partner’s, Emerging blog post and see what’s cooking on the election menu for restaurants: https://lnkd.in/gVEHyzMS Don’t wait—vote with your appetite!

One of the problems with politicians like Newsom. Is the lack of knowledge when it comes to economics. On the surface it makes since to increase the minimum wage as people need to live and pay bills and higher wages will give them more money. But under the surface are the business owners who also have bills to pay and need to feed their families and can only afford to pay their employees so much to run a profitable business. So with the recent wage hike in California by Newsom over 10,000 jobs have been lost and possibly more are to come. A great question for Newsom would be - "How do 10,000 people now pay their bills at $0 per hour?" That is the part of the equation that is sadly missed by Newsom and most politicians. Free Markets work. We need the Government to stay out of over regulating businesses and allow everyone to profit from living in America. https://lnkd.in/gJ23gBZm

It's #Monday which means I have a fresh Medium article. Today's topic: why increasing wages is a bad idea. Look, inflation is hitting all of us hard. Believe me, I almost had a heart attack when one of my favorite coffee shops charged me $5 for a drip cup of coffee. But the rise in prices doesn't just mean things have gotten more expensive. It also means the value of wages has declined. The easiest solution is to just demand a higher wage. That might make sense in the short-term but it isn't sustainable. There are limits to wage growth. Demanding a wage that exceeds the value of the labor category you're in can do more harm than good. You can read more here about why that's a problem not just for hourly workers but for salaried white collar professionals too: https://lnkd.in/gh-zrcAC
