If I were a brand struggling to keep inventory in stock, these are the questions I’d ask my team: 1️⃣ How accurate are your inventory numbers? Without these being accurate - it’s incredibly difficult to properly plan out supply. 2️⃣ How often are you ordering from your suppliers? Is there a standard ordering schedule in place? Without a process here, it makes it incredibly difficult for your suppliers to execute upon your POs and know how/when to schedule your production runs. 3️⃣ Do you have safety stock levels identified? This should be calc-ed using lead time and buffer (dependent on how volatile sales are or supplier performance). 4️⃣ How predictable is your demand? The first step should always to be looking towards standardizing your supply planning and procurement processes (which should help solve for all issues that are within your control), but the second step needs to be looking at how far off your demand plans are. If you’re consistently off, it is likely high time that you need to look at a different way to forecast demand (note: statistical demand plans are not going to work for all brands, especially early stage ones in growth mode). Mary Kate Kloeblen Effective communication between your supply chain, sales, and marketing teams is crucial. Misalignment or delays in sharing vital information can lead to overestimating or underestimating stock needs. Regular cross-functional meetings and clear communication protocols ensure that everyone is on the same page, reducing the risk of stockouts or overstock situations.
Good questions! Having safety stock without clear demand forecasting can turn into a guessing game—both need to be spot-on.
