An interesting perspective on the academic peer review system, presented as an anitrust arrangement instituted by journal companies in this fascinating legal case. Among other things, peer review is presented as as an arrangement to fix the price of academic labour at zero. Journal practices are also argued to restrict the right of academics to freely discuss their work while they wait (often for extended periods) for peer reviews of submitted work, all the while being prevented from submitting that work to other journals. #highereducation #academicwork #journals #peerreview

Scholarly publishers and journals are at the helm, steering academic discourse. But with great power comes great responsibility, and maintaining research integrity lies at the heart of their mission. Publishers invest significant resources in vetting submissions, ensuring technical compliance, language quality, and research integrity. But what if these tasks could be automated to assist editorial desks, giving them an additional layer of assurance about the quality of the research they publish? With over 20 checks for various markers of research integrity alone, Paperpal Preflight for Editorial Desk is here to transform the way journals assess manuscripts. Preflight analyses each manuscript for language quality, technical compliance and research integrity, and assigns a weighted score to the result of each check. The composite score at the end offers a reliable assessment for editors to make informed decisions. For an inside look at how Preflight can revolutionize your editorial efficiency, visit https://ow.ly/TESy50RA8ZI. #ResearchIntegrity #ScholarlyPublishing #EditorialEfficiency #ResearchQuality #AIInScience

Last year Elsevier had their editorial board walk out for prioritizing profits over their publishing mission (profits outpaced Google, Apple & Amazon). This year SIX publishing houses are facing an antitrust lawsuit based on the following: - Lower labor costs by agreeing not to compensate scholars for performing their peer review services; - Reduce competition by requiring scholars to submit their manuscripts to only one journal at a time; and - Control access to scientific information by prohibiting scholars from freely sharing their research while their manuscripts are under peer review. Peer-reviewed scientific publishing should and is going to have to change in the near future to better serve the scientific community. https://lnkd.in/ebmXv8Gf

I'm not going to lie, I am glad this is happening. These journals are too powerful and do not give back to the communities that make them possible, including the Authors themselves who have to fight and compete to be included. Being a scientist is not a well paid job. It is driven by curiosity, passion, creativity, and a special kind of dogged brain that doesn't give up. Publishers take advantage of these singular minded humans that want only to share their incredible discoveries and work product. They show favoritism, and limit growth of students and bodies of knowledge even by aligning with certain schools and rejecting great material from others, and charging access to materials ($25 or more for ONE paper!!!). Students can't afford this and unless they're at a top tier school they won't have access to a subscription either. Punblishers are not the content experts, they are the gatekeepers, and instead of sharing knowledge they capitalize on it. I will be happy when all publishers leave copyrights to the authors with only a short window for first print rights, then let's open it up and make knowledge truly equitable available. It should be! https://lnkd.in/gxFNnNJi

Publishing your work in academia has its controversies, as Arash Abizadeh points out in his article in The Guardian. As a university-owned, open-access journal with NO submission or accessing fee at all, our editorial team can relate to Abizadeh's thoughts: "we feel a strong responsibility to help build collective momentum towards a better arrangement: a publishing model that no longer wastes massive amounts of public resources feeding profits to private corporations, secures editorial independence against the pressures of profit-making and makes research available to everyone, free of charge. This isn’t just an academic problem. A revolution in the publishing landscape could also help stem the tide of disinformation and propaganda in the public sphere. Such an alternative is available, but it’s hard to get there. We want to change that." https://lnkd.in/dt2XYXGj

Thanks for this. Quite surprising that large publishers have more than consolidated their position with top tier papers. The mixed economy has not progressed as expected in the areas that count.
