Ms Teresa Ribera is the Executive Vice-President-designate of the European Commission for a Clean, Just and Competitive Transition. She has been Third Deputy Spanish Prime Minister and Minister for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge. What were our impressions on her hearing? Ribera emphasised the need to boost climate action in and outside of the EU while proving to defend the European Green Deal. Moreover, “pave the way for a new architecture beyond 2030 to enable us to reach net zero by mid-century, counting on different clean tech sectors and a leading decarbonised industry as part of the Clean Industrial Deal to ensure access to fresh water and healthy ecosystems, clean energy and an efficient circular economy while reducing inequality gaps.” In that line, Ribera insisted on the need to implement and enforce existing legislation on the matter, which aligns with CEEweb’s position on the EU Strategic Agenda concerning the current lack of political support for the Green Deal, including significant delays in its implementation — in particular, the withdrawal and delay of some fundamental legislation (see more: https://lght.ly/o26ij7e). Ribera was also adamant as to the need to accelerate the green transition and improve the bloc’s ability to deal with the extreme flooding and droughts that are becoming more common. Resilience and adaptation are key, as CEEweb has noted it, needing to significantly increase public and private funding for biodiversity and climate-adaptation, as well as for sustainable economic and industrial investments partly by mobilising new resources.
