The documentary TRADER is as legendary as the trader it is about, Paul Tudor Jones. Sometimes it vanishes from the internet or can only be found via obscure links. I have seen it many times, and I still smile the moment it starts. I once showed it during an offsite meeting with my cocoa colleagues and as the sound was so crappy, due to the age of the video and I only had a laptop without speakers, around 15 people gathered in silence around my laptop. Every time something important was said (I knew it would come and knew everyone could relate to it) I raised my hand and index finger. I think it is one of the best documentaries on traders and #trading ever made. Now we are making the Strong Source commodity podcast, we are receiving a lot of questions on how to prepare for getting into the industry and prepare for an interview. Watch this documentary. When you smile, and it excites you, think it is brilliant and you want to work with guys like him, that's a good sign. When you wonder why he's shouting all the time and what the fuss is all about, maybe it's not for you. During the podcast I have said several times that most, if not every good trader I know doesn't have a big ego, and I rarely saw them shout or get excited. Times have changed too. I have met Paul Tudor Jones a couple of times. I even gave him a presentation about cocoa. He was very kind, considerate, and quiet. He listened very carefully and then had some questions and comments which were really strong, as if he was a cocoa specialist. He wasn't, but this was just his extreme talent on display. He could talk to me about cocoa in a way that I was very impressed, just basis what he had heard from me, and his enormous intellect and experience about the #markets. Enjoy!
TRADER - THE DOCUMENTARY (1987)

Pure classic. I have this documentary saved in my laptop and sometimes watch it when heading to work (even if I’m not trader or PM). One of the lesson is that a lot people focus on how much they can win on a deal while they should focus on how much they are willing to lose on that particular trade. All is about proper risk management
One of the best documentaries out there. What would you say are some of the most important things you have taken from it?
Tudor was a great positive influence starting very early in my career. (EST. 1997) The knowledge transfer I have received from him and their group over the years has been invaluable and I’m so deeply appreciative for those teaching lessons.
Great post as always Mr Bron! Would love to hear your thoughts/advice for aspiring physical traders who would deal primarily with emerging markets, where price and market data aren’t always readily available (if they exist at all).
Thanks for posting it Martijn Bron. And congrats for the amazing (and high level) content being shared throught the Strong Source podcast!
Great to learn trading mindset: 1) Hope is feeling not for traders "sell five-forty on the market-march-go", "... I will sell 4 tankers on the opening" 2) Respect to the money. Despite of the size is a business gotta be profitable "to earn gain on thousand dollars is the same to earn on million". Great documentary I will add to Floored 2010 (CME) I used to consider as part of my learning path https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lW37sEkXMMc
It is a good documentary and I like watching and rewatching it many times. I like doing that with interviews and podcasts of hedge fund managers in general. I must have watched everything publicly available concerning Dalio, Soros, Druckenmiller, Paul Tudor Jones, Warren Buffet, John Paulson, Ken Griffin. I particularly double down on the parts where they talk about the details of their big trades, like with Paulson during one of the podcasts he did in 2021 with a guy named Logan Lin the level of detail of his housing market short was unbelievable. I read the book on him and even that didn’t cover some of the details, so from a pure historical archival perspective, things like these are gold. This documentary on PTJ shows the origins of his 1987 stock market short and thereby its significant. Being able to be obsessive about stuff like this is I think way more important than b-school or pedigree at least when it comes to buy side because it’s talent and interest alone that matters.
" the whole world is simply nothing but a big flowchart of capital " and " They (market) cost me a lot today and they are going to pay 100% interest " have been two influential quotes from the documentary showcasing how he views markets and how he handles losses. I find it amazing how many of the concepts from a 37 yo video are still relevant today.
