I asked a CEO of a fast-growing tech company, what type of cold email he would respond to. Here is what he said: “I never respond to cold emails. But I might forward it to our marketing team if it has solid social proof, is data-driven, short, and speaks at my level”. Let's unpack that: “I never respond to cold emails” Well, can you blame him? The average CEO gets bombarded with 100-200 emails a day. So, instead of aiming for a direct response, it made me think broader—what other engagement actions can I drive? "I might forward it to our marketing team if…" Many marketers get obsessed with a positive reply rate but you may need to think out of the box here. In saturated markets, the real win might be capturing attention and getting your foot in a door of the organization via an influencer instead. When would the CEO take action with a cold email? ✔️”Solid social proof” did XYZ for a company like yours, and can do it for you too. Here's a proof: logo, case study, tech and etc. ✔️”Data-driven” Do your homework. Research the person, the company, their wins, and their challenges ✔️”Short” usually, it takes 2-seconds to skim an email and decide if it’s worth exploring or not. Make every word count. ✔️”Speaks at my level” Understand how your persona thinks and speak their language at a channel they prefer (cold email, call, WhatsApp, LinkedIn and etc). Hearing this feedback made me refine my campaigns: 1. I expanded my buyer journey and added diversity to my CTAs 2. I leveraged AI to expand data research - nothing beats Clay for this job 3. Why we are repositioning RevGrowth as a GTM workflow/strategy agency + how Adam Abdur Rahman & I believe the outbound landscape is going to evolve in the next 6-12 months. When I got into the B2B outbound space back in early 2022, the landscape was SIGNIFICANTLY less sophisticated. Hiring VAs to write personalized first-lines was seen as high-level since the public hadn’t had access to OpenAI at this point, at the same time Instantly.ai had started becoming the mainstream sending software which made the entire cold email space boom. Everyone and their grandma began selling courses, communities, mentorships etc to capitalize on this new cold email frenzy, because at the time, cold email was sooooo easy. Anyone who had the ability to set up 10 email accounts, scrape leads off Apollo, and write a decent email could book 10-20+ calls per month no sweat, so teaching people how to start a cold email agency was easy money since results came easy for everyone. And with the plethora of noobies entering the space, this HEAVILY sophisticated the market and was the beginning of this downward spiral of cold email. Fast forward to Q3 2024, we have now found ourselves in a situation where cold email outbound is very, very difficult for the average B2B operator. ESPs come through once every 3-6 months to ruin peoples deliverability, databases are completely ran through with leads receiving 100s of cold emails per day, you essentially need to be a Tech, Ops, & AI guru to operate softwares such as Clay to build sophisticated lists that get real results, and the whole B2B world has access to unlimited resources on everything outbound in turn leveling the playing field. Many over the past 12 months have totally given up on outbound and went all in on content, or shut down their cold email agency completely as it was too hard. Most have found these months to be very grim for outbound and have led people to ask the question: is cold email is dead? Contrary to popular belief, I believe we live in the BEST era of outbound yet. We now exist in a market where ONLY the very best get ALL of the market share, and everyone on the bottom gets nothing. This means that there is more opportunity than ever for the REAL experts to shine and build a moat for their name in the space, which is exactly what we’re doing at RevGrowth. Gone are the days of basic data scraping and copy-n-paste email templates. To succeed in this market you must become a bespoke GTM Engineer who is able to extract the best data on the web, formulate a strong GTM strategy, and create systems for pushing relevant messaging at scale. We realized that we were doing ourselves a disservice by simply positioning ourselves as another “outbound agency”, since in reality, we provide much more than just outbound... CONT. I built an AI-driven email outreach campaign and here is what I learned. Everybody got excited about AI and how it can be applied specifically in sales and marketing. Well, every single tool I use for outreach nowadays has an AI feature 🤖 But our brains are powerful, and we're still the ultimate sales wizards compared to any algorithm out there. In just about 6 months after ChatGPT boom, almost everybody can spot an AI-generated text not saying about email copy (just think about email subject lines that come with capitals in each word). so, what I learned is: - AI emails are too long, too formal or too casual - personalization is too abstract or too detailed without proper data input - clients easily spot AI-generated text and ignore it - high risk of "AI hallucination" or misinterpretation - more expensive to set up and maintain So, does it mean it's a no-go for AI in emails? Not! I found the AI-driven approach is super powerful for data research and personalization especially when doing account-based (ABM) campaigns. For example: - research what the company does and transform it into 3-4 words trigger - write a short icebreaker based on the recipient's LinkedIn bio, education, or recent post - research a persona that recently left the company and address a need for a new hire/expertise in the field - define the ideal customer profile (ICP) of a lead by checking their case studies and personalize your lead magnet - add a joke to your follow-up (ChatGPT writes hilarious jokes, try it yourself) - find a restaurant near to your prospect and offer a dinner commenting the best-reviewed dish And much more when adding your creativity to AI.
