Book of the Week #123: Business Stripped Bare Author: Richard Branson Reason for Reading: Enjoy Branson’s books and business philosophy Takeaways: - Avoid taking on someone else’s legacy - The hardest taskmaster of all is a person’s own conscience, so the more responsibility you give them, the better they will work for you - Brands exist as a means of communicating what to expect from a product or service - Change always happens more quickly than you want - As an agent of change, your arrival is always going to hurt people. The changes you’re bringing in are threats to existing interests - Experts are only experts in their field. They’re not experts in your idea - Any fool can make something complicated, it is hard to make something simple - What you’re bad at doesn’t interest people, and shouldn’t interest you. Don’t let your limits knock your self-confidence - Markets tell us the price of everything and the value of nothing My goal is to spread knowledge by sharing a book that I’ve read each week. I’d love to hear about any books that you are a fan of as well! #bookshelf #knowledge

World Book Day! Here's a selection of my recent and enduring favourites... The Night Circus - Erin Morgenstern: pure fantasy escapism. The Goldfinch - Donna Tartt: I'm not sure words can do justice to how stunning this book is. The Bonfire of the Vanities - Tom Wolfe: I adore New York, and this book captures the excesses of 1980s New York to perfection. When Breath Becomes Air - Paul Kalanithi: heartbreaking, and yet somehow manages to be uplifting at the same time. A true must-read. Never Split the Difference - Christopher Voss: I only recently started reading business books in earnest, and this one did challenge a lot of my thinking about how we traditionally approach negotiation in sales. Invisible Women - Caroline Criado Perez: Infuriating. But important. Underworld - Don Delillo: My favourite book ever, impossible to sum up and arguably the great American novel of the 20th century. I wrote my degree dissertation on the Prologue alone. It seamlessly weaves factional narrative around factual events in US history. Winning on Purpose - Fred Reichheld: I finished this last week, having been inspired by my recent change of company, and it just makes so much sense. And it applies equally to our personal lives as it does to business, which makes it even more worth your time to read. If you've also read and enjoyed any of the below, I'd love to hear your other recommendations as I'm always looking for my next favourite book!! #worldbookday
