"It makes me vomit." That was Richard Dreyfuss when asked about the recently enacted AMPAS representation and inclusion rules for Best Picture qualification. I agree completely with Mr. Dreyfuss and I think you will too if you watch the full interview (below) and ignore the knee-jerk outrage of those who have not. (Read the draconian 'Standards' here: https://lnkd.in/gNfEArRG) #OscarsSoWhite. Yup. They're also almost purely a popularity contest, easily manipulated, entirely self serving and, 19 out of 20 times, culminate in the most insipid and banal TV of the year. In the late 80s/early 90s when Harvey devoted Miramax to gaming the system, there was a spark of intrigue, but that didn't last long. The Spirit Awards threatened to shake things up for a minute but rapidly morphed into a star-fucking sellout. The bottom line is that if you care about winning an Oscar today, you're either a callow, boorish studio executive or an insecure man/woman-child desperate for validation. (Or you might just be confused about what really matters.) Any organization claiming to represent artists that can, with a straight face, impose such arbitrary - or really any - rules on its artist constituents, deserves to be summarily denounced and abandoned. I applaud Richard Dreyfuss for publicly speaking truth to the brittle and submissive. https://lnkd.in/gmJxk9u3
