5 ways AI will transform insurance underwriting: (and who will win the race) AI is infiltrating insurance, promising to slash risk assessment from hours to minutes. But the tech isn't foolproof yet. Insurers must tread carefully to avoid liability minefields. In this week's LION Specialty newsletter, we predict the 5 main ways insurers will deploy AI in underwriting: 1. Learning risk appetites and underwriting protocols 2. Aggregating data more efficiently 3. Generating assessment memos faster than humans 4.Expediting risk decisions 5.Turbocharging speed and efficiency, especially for larger deals We also forecast who will lead the AI underwriting race (hint: it might not be the mammoths). But that's not all. The latest edition also covers: • Berkshire's Ajit Jain warning insurers aren't making money on cyber • Private equity's low-risk lending push (and the underwriting ripples) • RenRe's view on the improving Florida reinsurance market Like this post and comment "newsletter" or DM us to get the next edition delivered straight to your inbox. Insightful!
You should watch Werner Vogels’s keynote from AWS Re:Invent last year. He goes over the process he took to build a “simple” AI to help detect intracranial hemorrhaging from medical imaging. The crux was a single slide: “AI predicts, professionals decide.” So many business leaders right now think that Generative AI can just magically do things, but at the end of the day glorified linear algebra determining vector paths doesn’t create anything new, and ultimately doesn’t “understand” what it’s doing. we’re going to come to an influx point in which there has to be accountability for an over reliance on an under-(or over-)trained AI not making the right choice. IMO, in an industry where language is so critical, the successful players are going to be the ones that implement responsible AI usage, meaning adequate guardrails, training, testing, and ultimately the most efficient process for human interference. Those companies almost certainly will not be the ones who are necessarily the fastest, or definitely not the largest.
I’m really interested to see where AI is going to bring us around insurances. An industry that is prone to be disrupted
Exciting insights on AI revolutionising insurance underwriting! The shift towards faster risk assessment, more efficient data aggregation, and quicker decision-making processes herald a new era in the industry. LION Specialty's projections on AI utilisation and industry trends add a layer of anticipation to the future of insurance underwriting.
Very interesting
This is really interesting. I'm a little skeptical of how much we can trust AI and automations but I love seeing all the use cases and potential.
AI is certainly disrupting traditional industries where language and semantics can be interpreted and recycled. Already disrupting Law by documenting precedents and minimising human 'expertise'.
FLIP's breakdown of AI's transformative potential in insurance underwriting is truly fascinating. Looking forward to seeing how these forecasts unfold!
AI’s impact on underwriting is groundbreaking. It’s exciting to follow these developments and adapt accordingly!
