Another great AFP Charlotte lunch program last week - "Understanding Donor Behavior and Donor Data to Drive Impact." with Shannon (Hinson) Green, MBA, CFRE of Habitat for Humanity. As a former corporate sales and marketing starategy professional who now works with #nonprofits, effective use of metrics is an area where a lot of organizations have the potential to improve, but it is challenge to balance with the other pressing priorities of NFP leaders/fundraisers. Here are some tips to consider: ⭐ Start with tracking 1-3 metrics consistently. There are many options, so think about where you'll get the most revenue impact or reduce costs - retention rates with higher level donors, acquisiton costs for new donors by channel, acquistion channels that lead to new recurring donors, etc ⭐ It costs 5X to acquire a new donor than it does to retain one - consider what you could do to increase donor retention in different segments and what that would do to increase future revenue ⭐ Younger donors are choosing to give to fewer organizations than Boomers, and they want to hear from you more often. So you'll likely have fewer small dollar donors coming into your organization to cultivate and intentionality of donor journey will really matter. Reminder - you can reuse great content in multiple ways and don't always need to create something new. Just because you've seen a particular success story or stat a million times, does not mean that your donors have or remember it. ⭐ When you do longer term (3-5 year) planning, do both a top down and bottoms up model. Top down - expect the 10% industry standard increase per year and then increase or decrease based on internal (staff, technology, marketing budget, events plan, etc) and external (macroeconomic trends, giving trends in your cause type/geographic area, etc) Bottoms up - ensure you have the right individual staff capacity in place to hit your goals - the sum of individual goals should exceed the organizational goal to allow for underperformance, onboarding, staff transitions, vacations, etc. ⭐ Check that staff time spend and marketing/events spend aligns with the stated development goals of the organization and the donor hierarchy you've established ⭐ And of course, it wouldn't be a chat about metrics these days without a mention of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Consider the possibilities in predictive modelling for future giving behaviors / engagement scoring / giving program success + content generation - newsletters, email subject lines, research, grant application first passes + fundraising call scripts So go forth and prosper with more effective use of data.
