Weekend #pod pt 2 alert! ICYMI, Karen Graham and Carolyn Woodard had a fascinating discussion on being a Learning Organization in our June Webinar. If you are struggling with managing the things your nonprofit knows, it may be a tool problem or having enough personnel problem or a priority problem. Solving the underlying problem will help your organization learn more from what you know. We know #learning organizations are very successful in the #nonprofit sector. #nonprofitleadership #nonprofitexcellence #nonprofitmanagement #peopleareimportant #investinlearning #lifelonglearning Thanks Buzzsprout for the soundbite!

Engaging Difficult Conversations in the Non-profit Sector While Focusing on Community (Link in comments.) "I'm going to react out of that defensiveness, that self-awareness. that emotional intelligence that you had in that moment, I had in the smaller moment, to be able to hold that and say, really, what's going on with me? Before I proceed and address maybe what needs to happen or what's going on. And so I think that's a huge piece, even in this conversation within our city and broader about how we engage difficult conversations because this stuff is messy. There's a lot of things that are overlapping. Reality is we are dealing with money. And so the reality is if an organization comes in and funding goes there that now comes out of your budget. That does impact your organization. But can you have those conversations proactively? Can you have those conversations in a way that would allow both entities or organizations to operate for the betterment of the participants and the community?" - Ron Waddell #therippleeffect #podcast #Worcester #nonprofit

NPO’s, do you currently have a strong relationship with your board members? Recently, we had the pleasure of sharing insights on Tzivia Cohen’s Podcast, Change the World, about “Secrets to Scaling a Non-Profit.” Toward the end of the interview, we touched on the significant impact board members have on a non-profit's success, and it got us thinking. Non-profits, when was the last time you truly engaged with your board members? Board members are often incredibly successful in their respective fields and deeply passionate about their non-profit involvement. They’ll champion your efforts and partner with you to clarify your goals and mission. But, often NPO board members are under-utilized. When you collaborate effectively with your board members, here's what happens. They become your NPO's biggest advocates and assets. They'll offer up strategic guidance, objective POV's, and set compliance standards. All in all, these members ensure everything is running smoothly and ethically at your NPO because they are on your team, rooting you on. At Executive Arm, we offer support for special projects, including board member training, galas, and fundraising events. This can further help amplify the role your board members have in driving your mission forward. How involved are your board members at your NP? Tell us in comments.

Most fundraisers agree that you won’t achieve serious growth without first investing in fundraising. But how do you actually persuade the board to invest? In this podcast episode I talk to the experienced fundraising leader, Adam Heuman. In three separate charities, of varying sizes, Adam has asked the board to invest, and all three times his request has been successful. We talk about what holds many fundraising directors back from even exploring the issue, and why Adam feels it’s so important to address it. He explains the particular things he does when he prepares. Using stories from across his career, Adam explains the crucial question he always asks the board; the tempting mistake he once made which was a complete waste of time and why it’s usually right to start the process even if you don’t yet know all the answers.
