Seems like a sensible move given operational location, bid budget, availability slots and overall potential project sucess. Had many USNS vessels dock in the middle east during my time working for the yard, all sucessful and with much positive feedback. Appears to be more of a practical operational - financial overview, rather than a national economic view. Creates a fairer and healthier economic atmosphere, it is not necessary for us to buy homemade products in every situation, also stimulates national industries to keep up with the development of the global economy.

🚢 Exciting Updates from the Port Authority! 🚢 The Port Authority expects two new ship-to-shore cranes to arrive at APM Terminals later today! While we do not have an exact arrival time, the Port is monitoring the vessel and will keep you all apprised of its progress. Director Driscoll has shared insightful comments on investments in the container terminal, updates on the deepening and widening project, and an overview of the new cranes. "The two new cranes represent a $40M investment by APMT, following the $366M channel deepening and widening project. LAND 8710 Phase 1 could represent the first test of speed to capability. The $2 billion project is slated to deliver its first vessel by the end of 2026. It has taken 8 months from when Birdon and Austal were selected as the preferred tender (last November) for the Government to formerly approve Phase 1. The announcement does not make any mention that the parties are in contract or when they expect to be in contract. I do suspect some form of seed contract could have been signed to address long lead items and initial planning. Nevertheless, I am not sure 8 months is what the DSR meant by streamlining the capability acquisition processes. The decision to upturn the bidding process by selecting a design and shipbuilder from competing consortiums may have been the right decision, but it also made things more complicated which in turn possibly explains the drawn-out process. This could have been avoided if an appropriate approach to market strategy was adopted. The customer could have first selected a vessel design (in this case Birdon) and then tendered for a shipbuilder (in this case Austal). It would have been fairer for Industry and cleaner for all. Having the prototype vessel built by a shipyard that was not then selected to participate in LAND 8710 Phase 1 can only cause problems and delays. LAND 8710 Phase 1 could be the first test of speed to capability, and no slippage mantra that echoes through Russel and Campbell Park Offices. I wish all involved Godspeed.
