In a much-anticipated ‘aviation white paper’, the Federal Government recently floated ideas to change the face of air travel in this country, with a Charter of Rights for passengers to combat misconduct, delays and cancellations at the centre of its proposals. Alongside the #AviationWhitePaper was a Treasury-conducted review of competition among the airlines – something that has been a problem for air-dependent travellers in this country since the collapse of Ansett. The concentration of market power in the aviation sector has become a focal point of political debate, with Qantas and Virgin controlling 92% of the domestic market. The review uncovered how greater competition would reduce high prices, noting that when a second competitor was added to a given route, airfares on that route fell by 25%. Major U.S. airlines are suing the DOT over new rules requiring upfront fee disclosures, arguing it confuses consumers. But what do consumers think? In under 2 hours I ran a survey in Suzy, asking 300 consumers what they thought: ✈ 61% say it's Extremely Important to them to see all potential fees upfront when booking a flight online ✈ 77% prefer all fees are included in the initial price shown ✈ 60% think requiring upfront fee disclosures will make booking much easier (an additional 18% think it will make booking slightly easier) #Aviation #LegalNews #ConsumerRights #mrx #airlines #suzy

Navigating Airline Regulations: Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has responded to criticism from airline executives regarding perceived over-regulation by the Biden administration. He pointed out that airlines continue to be profitable, even with the implementation of new passenger-protection measures, including automatic cash refunds for canceled flights. As the industry anticipates changes with the incoming Trump administration, Buttigieg remains committed to regulations that prioritize passenger rights, stating they enjoy broad public and bipartisan support. This situation raises important questions about the balance between corporate interests and consumer protections in the airline industry. #AirlineRegulations #PassengerProtections #BidenAdministration #PeteButtigieg #DeltaAirLines #SouthwestAirlines #TravelNews #ThanksgivingTravel #ConsumerRights #BusinessVsPeople https://loom.ly/5VHRpco

Matthew Boswell, you’re such a tease. As commissioner of competition, you want consumers to believe that improving airline competition is a priority for your office. In fact, the federal antitrust agency is conducting a market study that promises to delve into the dynamics of the problem and detail the solutions. Canadians, though, are tired of being given false hope. Your political masters already know what to do to remedy airline competition. They just won’t do it. #competitionpolicy #antitrust #airlines #competitionbureau #cabotage
Opinion: Stop the charade. Ottawa isn’t prepared to do what it takes to improve airline competition
