#ICYMI over the weekend, Floodlight dropped a massive investigation into utilities and fossil fuel interests that are spending big to influence the regulators meant to keep them in check. What did we find? In the past decade, fossil fuel and utility interests have spent over $13.5M to back commissioner candidates in the 10 states where utility commissioners are elected - twice as much as renewable energy interests. The result? ⚡ In states like Alabama and Louisiana, where fossil fuel money accounts for 55% and 43% respectively of commissioner campaign funding, little renewable energy is used. 🌞 There, solar is vastly underutilized, despite ideal conditions to generate energy from the sun. Why? Elected officials, often backed by fossil fuel interests, appear reluctant to embrace the change needed to lower emissions and consumer costs. The North Carolina Utilities Commission (NCUC) recently released its long-awaited Carbon Plan. While the plan outlines some steps toward a cleaner energy future, it falls short of the ambitious goals set forth in the bipartisan HB 951. Despite promising strategies to expand solar and wind energy, the plan's continued reliance on fossil fuels jeopardizes our ability to meet critical 2030 emissions reduction targets. This disappointing decision could have significant consequences for our environment and our communities. Did you know that 25% of US counties have restrictions on renewable energy in place? One of the reasons we fund local power building is because we understand that so much of the clean energy transition rests on decisions made at the local level, from zoning rules to taxes to outright bans. This fantastic report and interactive map from Center for Progressive Reform offers an in-depth analysis of local energy ordinances, their implications for a just transition, and potential solutions. https://lnkd.in/eAYee-Eg #energydemocracy

⚡EmPOWERing Texas through Solar for All ⚡ John Hall, HARC’s President and CEO, will be presenting at the Gulf Coast Power Association (GCPA) Fall Conference on Oct. 2nd, in Austin, TX. Mr. Hall will be discussing the Texas Solar for All initiative. Earlier this year, the Texas Solar for All Coalition was awarded a $249.7 million grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund. The goal of the Coalition is to accelerate investments in low-income solar and storage, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, close the solar equity gap for energy-burdened low-income families, and create green jobs in Texas. As a Coalition member, HARC, in partnership with local community-based organizations, will be administering individual home and community energy hubs to promote energy resilience and reliability during climate events and outages. 🍃 Wind Power Wastage Costs the UK Over £1 Billion in 2024 🍃 The Bloomberg UK article below highlights a critical challenge facing the UK’s energy transition: record levels of wind curtailment due to grid constraints. While the UK's wind capacity has grown by 50% in the last five years, grid infrastructure hasn’t kept pace, leading to skyrocketing congestion costs and wasted renewable energy. At equiwatt, we believe Demand Side Response (DSR) is a vital part of the solution. By shifting energy consumption away from peak times, DSR can reduce the strain on the grid, making better use of clean energy and preventing waste. 💡 With tools like our virtual power plant (VPP), businesses and households can actively participate in balancing the grid—helping prevent the curtailment of wind power and saving money that could be reinvested into decarbonisation efforts. It’s time to rethink how we approach grid flexibility and ensure renewable energy powers the UK toward its net-zero goals. If your business is interested in enabling your customers to be part of the solution then we would love to hear from you! 👉 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eHS9w5TF . . . #energynews #energyindustry #demandsidemanagement #windpower #energyefficiency #energyinnovation #virtualpowerplants #startup
