People living with dementia may lose the ability to speak, but they continue to feel the emotions. Everyone can benefit from The Forward with Dementia website! It was created to challenge negative stereotypes about dementia. It provides guidance after a diagnosis of dementia, and enables people with dementia and their care partners to lead fulfilling lives with dementia. Forward with Dementia seeks to change the narrative of ‘there is nothing that can be done’ to one that reinforces the strengths people with dementia have. It aims to motivate people to live as well as possible. https://lnkd.in/gijMqXwz Resources for 1. The Music Dementia and Technology project is changing the perspective on how music can be used in dementia care and support agency in people with dementia. This paper provides the theoretical foundation. With thanks and congratulations to Justin!
While exhibiting here at the Dementia Congress, I am excited to share our newly published article, which reexamines the goals of musical activities for people living with dementia. It highlights the importance of fostering joint agency, selfhood, and couplehood through an embodied and relational approach. If you’re attending and would like to discuss these ideas, please feel free to visit us at our booth. https://lnkd.in/gd95ag9H Jennifer MacRitchie Renee Timmers Dementia Community

You come into my home and start removing my clothes. I hit you. Am I being aggressive? Most people would say no, I'm defending myself. But if I had dementia it would be called aggressive behavior. I would be considered aggressive. Most "aggressive" behavior in dementia care is actually defensive behavior. They feel the need to defend themselves from us. Let's stop making them feel that way And they will stop acting that way. Forcing care on someone is abusive. Even if we think it's in their best interest. There are ways to do this without forcing them. Without making them feel attacked. We need to learn them. We need to stop telling each other that this is normal in dementia care. Yes, it's common. That doesn't mean it's okay. Defensive behavior is not a symptom of dementia It’s a symptom of fear. And it is almost always preventable. Today's Resource outlines some of the key steps. What would you add? Or ask? ... The ABC Dementia Course & Community was created to support you to support someone with memory loss at home or in a care community. Did you know that it is expected by 2050, that over 13% of people over the age of 65 will be living with dementia? With more than half a million people currently living with dementia, the Alzheimer Society is your First Link to a community of experts, supporters, and peers. First Link is a referral program designed to help newly diagnosed people with dementia and their families get the help they need as soon as possible. Tomorrow, 21 September, is World Alzheimer's Day. This year's theme is "Time to act on dementia, Time to act on Alzheimer's". It focuses on attitudes toward dementia, seeking to redress the stigma and discrimination that still exists around the condition while highlighting the positive steps being undertaken by organisations and governments globally to develop a more dementia-friendly society. Join the Isisa Team as we care for and remember those who can't remember. Empathy and not sympathy is the anchor in our approach to Alzeheimer's - as caregivers, we are honoured to play a role in caring for affected individuals. #isisahealthcare #dementia #alzheimersawareness

"💚 Follow, Like, Save & Share for more dementia tips 💚 *actors demonstrating scenario* ➡️ This is just an example of how I begin my approach when waking up someone with dementia in the morning! So what exactly am I doing?! ➡️ knocking on the door ➡️ entering but not immediately turning on all of the lights ➡️ building rapport, talking about something that motivates the person with dementia (in this case it was coffee) ➡️ getting permission to open the blinds or turn the light on ➡️ These approaches are so helpful for building rapport, decreasing frustration, & increasing outcomes in dementia care ➡️ How do wake up your loved one?!"
