Salespeople..here’s a story on how to make a cold outreach. Most won’t do this.. About 6 years ago Televerde popped up on my LinkedIn feed. And it was a story about Michelle Cirocco. I was so inspired by her that I first sent an InMail .. days went by .. no response. So I did it the old-fashioned way..I sent her a card at her work address, telling her she inspired me. Weeks went by before I heard from Michelle. Then one day .. She called to thank me for my handwritten note. We had a nice chat and then she invited me to speak to a sales team of ladies at a facility in Rockville, IN. That year was 2018. We kept in touch as the years went by. Toward the end of 2022 .. I reached out to catch up with Michelle about her new role as CEO of Televerde Foundation. During that chat, she asked if I could facilitate 3 classes each week to teach cold calling among other topics. Class size is around 15-20 ladies who have never sold a thing! Michelle had me at “hello!” I’ve enjoyed the work so much because the ladies are grateful for the opportunity and eager to learn. And we do all the training virtually. Televerde Foundation gives women who are incarcerated a second chance through skill-based training. The ladies can choose from a portfolio of skills to learn from coding to sales and much more. I know some make fun of us who still believe old-school ways of selling still work. No one receives cards these days. Sending a card will definitely make you stand out in the noisy world of digital. Why not try it? What do you have to lose? And this isn’t the only handwritten card story I have! I’m telling you..it works!

If you’re asking why black women need their own professional development conference, let me put it into perspective. Black Women only make up 7.4% of the US population. 77% are in administration roles and less than 2% are in VP or C-Suite roles. Additionally black employees only make $0.63 to the dollar and the median income is $50K.. Whereas the majority represents 35% of the US population and make up 57% of VP or C-Suite roles. (McKinsey study and summarized by the Ivy Kusinga) The insurance industry makes up $843.6 billion (as of 2022). Our industry has the authority and ability to DISRUPT and embrace diverse and equitable opportunities. WE belong in all spaces where decisions are made. This conference was filled with sessions on how we take our superpowers and turn them into professional competitiveness. Be a compass and identify your passions and strengths (and even weaknesses) ➡️ turn them into bold moves (fight your fears) ➡️ Build intentional relationships and find your alliances/sponsors/mentors ➡️ Self-care is fuel ➡️ be a walking ROI and leave a legacy to lift others up And get this! All 200 of us walked a sisterhood second line through the streets of New Orleans representing insurance. I’ve never seen so many wide eyes asking what we do! Thank you to The Hartford for being an event sponsor yet again. I’m taking all these valuable lessons and experiences to pour into myself AND others. And The Award Goes To 🏆 A great way to be noticed is by getting an award 🏆 or industry recognition. Not only do you get noticed, it helps establish you as an expert or leader in your field. No matter your business size 🏆 will boost your visibility. 🎗 Some awards you can nominate yourself for, and others need 3rd party to nominate you. 🎗 Carefully research which awards are relevant, both large (national) and small (local). 🎗 Give full attention to the requirements and deadlines. 🎗 Highlight your achievements, results, innovations, or impact you or your company have made. 🎗 When possible quantify your impact. My term on the AAPPR Board of directors came to an end last week, and as I’ve been reflecting and compiling memories from the last six years, I’ve been humbled by the accomplishments, the progress, the hardships and the perseverance we have realized together. A group of virtual strangers coming together at the right time, with the right voices, collectively making a difference that will shape the future of not just our profession, but healthcare in this country. What a gift. Thinking on my own experience on the Board, a few speakers from our recent conference summed it up for me well: “Be the Bee” Doyin Richards A honey bee does not waste time trying to convince a fly that sh&t tastes like sh&t. They focus on what they can influence and build. The most powerful force in influencing change in equity and anti-racism is the white ally. Build the hive. Since joining the Board we’ve realized record membership numbers, the most inclusive and intentionally representative Board in association history, built the first DEI micro-credential of it’s kind, navigated a global pandemic and possible end of the association and made a decision on who we are and where we stand as an association in a climate of systemic racism and social disparities. “Play like a Queen.” Anna Frazier Be the Queen in the game of chess - the most important piece on the board. She may be given great power, but her strength is in her ability to alternate between progress and defense. Think two steps ahead, while never forgetting where you came from. Know your end goal, don’t be afraid to take risks, listen along the way, and bring others with you. I give tremendous credit to the Board leaders who invited me to the table. Who had the foresight and intention to seek out a new voice and experience. And then trust me in leading us into our future. “Don’t be a D&ck” Doyin Richards Empathy is not the same thing as compassion. Compassion inspires action. Know who you are and what you stand for. Don’t be afraid to look in the mirror. Show up, even when you don’t want to. Facilitate joy. No matter what room or environment we were in, I felt this at my core, collectively, with this Board. And that is the greatest accomplishment and gift of them all. In a profession where we are constantly told we aren’t good enough, that we need to do more, where the pressures of an entire organization can sit on your shoulders, working with the AAPPR Board of Directors and the incredible Staff has been the most validating and rewarding experience of my career. How many women in business can resonate with this? “The perfectionist in me was a hard and unforgiving task mistress. She would dismiss insecurities and anxieties, telling me to suck up the responsibility, the pressure, the desire to do the best job possible for clients, regardless of personal sacrifice or cost." This is an opening paragraph written by Nikki Alderson Coaching, a former barrister with a successful 19-year career at the Criminal Bar. That experience gave her enormous personal insights into the responsibilities, pressures and “expected” career paths of women working in law. This drive eventually resulted in burnout, and ultimately made her determined to support other women within the judiciary. She now works as a specialist Corporate and Executive Coach supporting law firms and Chambers to attract and retain female talent in senior partnership roles. Back in 2017, DNA Light Up played a key part in Nikki's journey. The process isn’t so much about teaching. It’s about recalibrating. Bringing certainty in who we are, confidence in our capabilities and clarity in our vision. Nikki describes her experience: “It gave me a sense of knowing that I could make the right decision for me, without needing the advice of other people, or needing to go to a mentor.
