Breaking News: 🚨🦾Europe has reached a major milestone in establishing landmark regulations for AI On the 13th of March 2024, the EU parliament approved what will be the worlds first set of regulatory rules to govern AI. 🧠Decoding the EU AI Act: A Closer Look at Risk Categories The EU AI Act divides AI technology into four risk categories: 1. Unacceptable Risk; 2. High Risk; 3. Limited Risk; and 4. Low Risk AI applications that pose a “clear risk to fundamental rights” will be banned and will be categorized as an “Unacceptable Risk” High risk AI such as those used in critical infrastructure such as education and healthcare will have to comply with strict requirements. This includes remote biometric identification systems, specifically restricting a governments ability to deploy real time biometric public surveillance except for in narrowly defined circumstances. Limited risk refers to the risks associated with lack of transparency in AI usage. The AI Act introduces specific transparency obligations to ensure that humans are informed when necessary, fostering trust. For instance, when using AI systems such as chatbots, humans should be made aware that they are interacting with a machine so they can take an informed decision to continue or step back. Providers will also have to ensure that AI-generated content is identifiable. Besides, AI-generated text published with the purpose to inform the public on matters of public interest must be labelled as artificially generated. This also applies to audio and video content constituting deep fakes. Most AI applications will likely be minimal or no risk, such as automated spam filters and will be free use. General purpose AI systems such as Chat GPT will fall into the limited risk category and will be required to be transparent about the material used to train their models and to comply with EU copyright law. 💬 What next? The regulation is expected to enter into force at end of legislature in May, after passing final checks and receiving endorsement form the European Council with staggered implementation from 2025 onwards. However, some have advocated for self regulation due to concerns that over regulation could stifle innovation amongst AI companies originating in the European market.
