COMMITMENT TO PARTNERSHIP // “I’ve always seen the job of the North East LEP as a little like being an orchestra conductor. Whatever the playbook of the time, our job has been to identify the best musicians and partners, work out how best to unite them and keep them on the same page to deliver a stellar performance.”
With the upcoming mayoral election and the establishment of the Mayoral Combined Authority, the North East Local Enterprise Partnership will cease to exist in its current form as it becomes part of the new authority. Yet its legacy and the lasting partnerships it has forged will long live on, having helped to unite the region’s business community and form a blueprint, through the Strategic Economic Plan, for continued economic growth and sustainability.
In a wide-ranging article, long-standing chief executive Helen Golightly OBE, who is standing down once the Mayoral Combined Authority is formed, details the vital role the LEP has played in cultivating knowledge and fostering connections throughout the region. Having overcome initial scepticism, the LEP has knitted together a community of stakeholders across the public, private and third sectors that has united in response to challenges such as Brexit, the pandemic and is now helping smooth the transition towards devolution.
The success of the LEP has been in no small part down to Helen, whose outstanding leadership, unstinting passion for the North East and willingness to engage has been a constant for the past decade.
