To help, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s Pro Bono Program matches eligible applicants with a licensed patent attorney, who donates their time to assist you in preparing and filing your patent application. In this video, I cover the basics of the program, including financial eligibility; requirements for your invention; and the filing of the program application, where I provide a few tips to make it easier. I was speaking with a guy a few days ago who said he hates patents because they cause price increases and block other companies from creating cheaper copies. He’s right that patents can enable patent owners to charge more and block competitors from copying. But he was wrong about that being a bad thing. I told him to look at the things he uses every day to make his life better. Every single one is the result of innovation. All innovation requires massive investments of time and money to achieve. Without those investments, there would be no innovation. If a company knew it would be copied the moment it entered the marketplace by competitors that did not have to make those investments to bring their copies to market, companies would not make those massive investments. Without patents, every innovative thing and use would disappear. Follow for all things IP. The latest edition of Sisvel Insights' Patent Transactions Watch has been published, with a round-up designed to keep patent owners, technology users and their advisers abreast of patent transfers with the potential to affect the licensing landscape. Patent assets, writes Jacob Schindler, remain a key bargaining chip in high-level dealmaking. A July transaction between Ericsson and Oppo, for example, coincided with a new patent cross-licence between the pair. Over the summer, USPTO assignments also saw two agreements which helped bring litigation to a close. In the case of a dispute between Philips and Telit Cinterion, the claimant received assets from an accused infringer. In the other, plaintiff Open Text Corp surrendered over 100 patents to a company it had named as a litigation defendant. They were not the only developments, though.
