Motherhood Penalty in Higher Education Institutions: An Invisible Reality? Our research delves into the impact of the motherhood penalty on the lives of female professors in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). By interviewing 26 mothers from both public and private HEIs, with children up to 12 years old, we uncovered how academic culture affects their careers. 📌 Key findings: The strong presence of a productivity culture and presenteeism in universities creates significant challenges for mothers striving to balance personal life and career. Motherhood is often seen as a "hindrance" in an environment that values constant availability and performance, frequently disregarding the personal demands faced by mothers. 💡 This research provides a crucial opportunity to give voice to female professors who are mothers and reflect on how organizations can become more inclusive. Understanding these experiences is the first step toward rethinking organizational practices and building more welcoming environments for all women. Shall we rethink the future of mothers in universities together? 🌱👩🏫 #Inclusion #MotherhoodAndCareer #MotherhoodPenalty #OrganizationalCulture #Academics #Productivity #Diversity #QualitativeResearch #QualitativeMethodology #AcademicResearch #CaseStudy #DataAnalysis #QualitativeInterviews #Humanities #SocialSciences #ResearchMethodology #Inclusion #DiversityAndInclusion #HigherEducation #humanresources Simone Kunde Mariane Lemos Lourenço Lady Day Pereira de Souza Rafael Ecke Tavares Busanello Disponível em: https://lnkd.in/derGw53S

Today, on International Women's Day (IWD), Griffith University Student Associations, the Griffith University Student Representative Council and Griffith University Postgraduate Students Association (GUPSA) are launching our report: "Where Is the Social Justice for Students? Experiences of Poverty on Placement". This release aligns with the 2024 IWD theme, “Count Her In: Invest in Women. Accelerate Progress,” urging us to confront the barriers that hinder economic and educational equality for women. Our report findings, drawn from a survey in which 86% of the participants were women, highlight the urgent need for systemic change at the intersection of gender and poverty on placements, impacting both education and future careers. 🔍 Key Insights: Students face escalating living costs during placements, leading to stress and mental health challenges. 82.5% of respondents identify with equity groups, urging inclusive responses. ⚖ Urgent Action Needed: To address the disproportionate representation of women in critical sectors that form the backbone of society and comprise our essential workforce. 📌 What Next: We invite educators, policymakers, students, and all stakeholders to engage with our findings, and extend our gratitude to Dorinda Harvey-Bravo for writing this report and to those already undertaking work in this space including Professor Ann Bonner (Griffith University) and Professor Karen Strickland (Edith Cowan University) on behalf of the Council of Deans of Nursing and Midwifery (CDNM), the Australian Council of Heads of Social Work Education (ACHSWE), and Griffith University’s Professor Caroline Rueckert PFHEA (Dean, Career Readiness) and colleagues. 🤝 To read the full report, stay updated on our advocacy, future consultations, and how you can support or benefit from our initiatives visit: https://lnkd.in/g8tM2eFd and follow us @waliwellnesshq 🔗 Full Report: https://lnkd.in/gjtmcMW3 #internationalwomensday2024 #genderequality #griffithuniversity #povertyonplacement

talvez alguém possa partilhar estes resultados com o actual governo português. a política baseada na evidência podia ser uma grande coisa. deixem de ser queixinhas e estudem! Effects of extending paid parental leave on children’s socio-emotional skills and well-being in adolescence 'We study how children’s socio-emotional skills and well-being in adolescence are affected by longer parental care during infancy. Exploiting a Danish reform that extended paid parental leave in 2002 and effectively delayed children’s entry into formal out-of-home care, we show that longer leave increases adolescent conscientiousness, emotional stability, and well-being, and reduces school absenteeism. The effects are strongest for children of mothers who would have taken short leave in the absence of the reform. For this group, longer leave also increases school grades and reduces the risk of getting a psychiatric diagnosis. This highlights how time spent with a parent is particularly productive during very early childhood.'

What advice is there for emerging male academics? ''The typical advice that I received from senior scientists was straightforward: avoid taking parental leave, minimize your childcare responsibilities and stay steadily focused on research. I understand the value of hard work in academia and beyond. But I am deeply concerned by the intensity with which this message — namely to disregard everything else — is delivered to younger scientists, along with how this advice seems especially geared towards men.'' Just reading this great blog post from #NTU colleagues Rachael Blazewicz-Bell (FHEA) and Aisling Walters that discusses the challenges faced by mothers juggling work, study, and motherhood. It highlights the importance of mothers completing their education, the barriers they face, and the concept of multiple "shifts" in their lives. #TeachMoms #EducatonMatters. https://lnkd.in/e2PT_FAm

**Grateful and Proud.** As a father, I’ve often wondered how many parents, particularly fathers, out there get the chance to spend real, uninterrupted time with their children, particularly in the formative first year. For many, I suspect, it’s a rare opportunity. That’s why I feel incredibly fortunate to work at Beca, a company that truly walks the talk when it comes to family values, offering three months of paid parental leave. It’s not just a gesture; it’s a step toward reversing the gender imbalances we see in the AEC sector. We often talk about how important it is to attract and retain top talent in our industry, but to me, creating a family-friendly workplace is a crucial part of that equation. When policies like these are embraced, it’s good news not only for parents like myself but for all of us. A big thanks to Beca for championing this. Your commitment to supporting families shows that when we invest in people, everyone benefits. I’m proud to be part of an organisation that understands it matters. #ParentalLeave #GenderEquality #AEC #FamilyFriendlyWorkplace #ProudToBeBeca

Do you know that we support a scientific restart after maternity and parental leave? 🧑🍼 👨🍼 At MENDELU, we understand that interrupting a scientific career due to maternity or parental leave is a critical moment that can significantly: 🐢 slow professional development 🔬 complicate the return to research activities 🏃♀️ increase the risk of leaving the field of science altogether. That’s why we offer a return grant 💰 This grant helps bridge the period after maternity/parental leave by covering childcare costs and providing individual mentoring. 👩🔬👨🔬 This year, the grant of 200,000 CZK was awarded to two female scientists, allowing them to fully focus on preparing major research projects, publications, or habilitations. 👩🔬 👩🎓 #mendelu #brnoregion #research #science

I understand how people think that #exam #accommodations have gotten out of hand. I agree for the most part. But there are times when accommodations really do make sense. This is one of them. This is a bit extreme, isn't it Georgetown University? [QUOTE] Georgetown Law denied Brittany’s request for reasonable accommodations in violation of Title IX. Brittany is expected to give birth to Baby Lovely within the first two weeks of December. Brittany has one in-person final scheduled for December 13. Brittany requested to (1) take the exam early or (2) take the exam from home (and on Exam 4) at the same time as everybody else on the exam date or deferral dates (which are December 16-18, 2024). Georgetown Law denied her recommendations, stating that it would be inequitable to all the other non-birthing students in her class. Georgetown Law suggested Brittany bring her days-old child to campus a few days after birth, with minimal recovery, to take the exam with more time so she can breastfeed her newborn baby during the exam. They told her, "Motherhood is not for the Faint of Heart." Title IX prohibits education institutions from discriminating against students based on sex, including current, potential, or past pregnancy or related conditions. An accommodation is not unreasonable and must be offered by the school unless it "fundamentally alters" the nature of its program. Georgetown Law has a legal and moral duty to support pregnant students during the regular school year or finals. Show them that no pregnant law student can ever be described as “faint-hearted.” If you have any questions, please contact Mari at [email protected]. This Mother's Day, we celebrate the unwavering strength and sacrifices of mothers everywhere.💪 But we also acknowledge the heartbreak that many endure, forced to choose between their careers and their children's education due to the immense pressure of the PSLE. This Mother's Day, let's honor the mothers in our midst by empowering them with a choice – the choice to pursue their dreams without sacrificing their children's well-being. By making the PSLE optional, we can alleviate the burden that forces mothers to put their lives on hold, allowing them to nurture their children's growth without compromising their own aspirations.🌸 We are on a mission to create a future where mothers can thrive both professionally and personally, without the looming shadow of a high-stakes exam dictating their life's trajectory.📚 We can build an education system that celebrates the bond between mother and child, fostering a supportive environment where neither has to sacrifice their dreams for the other. This Mother's Day, give the gift of empowerment, choice, and a future where motherhood and career aspirations can coexist in harmony. Participate in our survey, and wish the mothers in your life a HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!🎉 (Survey Link - https://lnkd.in/gbDken8Y) #MothersDay #HappyMothersDay #Singapore #education #psle #transformeducation #everychildsg #educationreform #psletuition
