Women in (EU) Politics. What have been the challenges that female politicians faced this year in the EU elections? What are the priorities and challenges of the new term and mandate? How can we ensure that gender equality remains high on the agenda? This has been the fil rouge of this evening’s conversation at The Nine. Key takeaways from the event: 📋 Women in EU politics should lead files where they are unusually underepresented, including foreign policy, defense and finance. 🗳️ One of the greatest barrier to women entering the EP this year was their positioning in national electoral lists. 👩💼 How to accomplish your goals as a woman in politics? Do it one step at the time, find a community that shares your mission and values, and just do it Thanks to the Nine again for hosting such interesting and eye-opening debates ✨ #EUPolitics #GenderRepresentationinPolitics #WomeninEUPolitics

The European Parliament election starts today, with the people of the Netherlands among the first to vote. Amidst this, it’s important to remember one of the fundamental bases for a prosperous and sustainable world with equal opportunities for everyone - gender equality. Recent data shows that the share of women in national parliaments of EU member states has increased over the past 20 years, though parity has yet to be achieved. The Nordic countries - Sweden, Finland and Denmark - are closest to the 50% threshold. Significant progress has also been made in France and Slovenia, where the proportion of women parliamentarians has tripled from around 12% to 38%. The average across all 27 countries remains quite low at around one-third, which is lower than in the EU Parliament, where the share of women in 2024 is approximately 40%. #macrobond #eu #elections #women #parliament

Tomorrow’s General Election is a critical moment for gender equality in UK politics. This year, women make up 40% of candidates in winnable seats, an exciting step towards a more representative Parliament. 🗳️ Despite this progress, we are not yet at gender parity. As we head to the polls, it’s crucial to recognise that the journey towards equal representation is ongoing. Political parties must take action to address biases in candidate selection and ensure diverse voices are included at every level. We call for: -Quotas and unbiased selection processes to support women, especially those from marginalised backgrounds. -Parliamentary reforms to remove barriers to women's participation, including better parental leave policies for MPs. -Commitments to 50% female representation in post-election frontbench and ministerial teams. A more gender-equal Parliament means a democracy that truly represents and serves everyone. Let's seize this opportunity for change. The EU is not walking the talk on gender equality. Here’s some sobering data that points to an epic fail. The European Parliament has just taken a major step backward in women's representation. Yes, you read that right. It seems most EU countries can't be bothered to put forward a single female candidate for Commission roles, with only five nations backing a woman for the top job. What year is it? This isn't just disappointing - it's a red flag. When we fail to push for gender equality in the highest corridors of power, we're not just hurting women. We're kneecapping our own ability to create smart, balanced policies for ALL. How can we possibly tackle issues like the gender pay gap, women's health, or gender-based violence when the rooms where these decisions are made lack diverse perspectives and female voices? It's time to get loud. Because if we don't push back now, we might wake up to find we've sleepwalked right back into the dark ages. To every EU leader who chose not to nominate a woman: we see you. To every voter who thought diverse representation doesn't matter: we challenge you. This isn't about political correctness - it's about having the full spectrum of talent and perspective at the table where our future is being shaped. We've fought too hard and come too far to let the clock be turned back now. It's time to flood the inboxes of representatives, and to demand better. Because a Europe that sidelines half its population is a Europe that's selling itself short. Let's shake up this boys' club. Simply put, European leadership should reflect ALL of Europe. https://lnkd.in/e9juwTvP #GenderEquality #WomenInLeadership #WomenInPolitics #EuropeanParliament #WomenEmpowerment

Hello friends. You might ask, Where is this picture from, and why have I posted it here? Well, this is a picture from a rally in Srikakulam I addressed today. What's unique about this rally is that it's a special women's rally exclusively organized for and attended by women. The importance of women's participation in democracy cannot be overemphasized. It is crucial for gender equality, a healthy democracy and achieving sustainable development goals. Increasing women's participation in politics doesn't just benefit women, but society as a whole. I strongly believe that political parties should take special measures to increase women's participation in political processes, offering them an opportunity to share their issues and ensuring that their needs are well-addressed. #womenempowerment #elections #genderequality #politics #india #women

I was honoured to open, alongside the IPU President Dr. Tulia Ackson, the annual Inter-Parliamentary Union-UN Women Parliamentary Day today at #CSW68. Speaking with more than 300 parliamentarians from over 30 countries, our discussion focused on the critical role parliaments have in advancing gender equality to end poverty. I highlighted that: ⚖ In an important election year, legislators are well placed to ensure the women they represent can live in dignity. We need them to support laws that promote gender equality and uphold women’s rights; and we need them implemented, so they can yield multiple dividends. ⚖ Parliamentarians can legislate with a gender lens. They can support laws that ensure decent wages, protect domestic workers, guarantee parental leave, and freedom of choice of employment. ⚖ To end poverty, women must be safe. Legislators have a key responsibility to advance this, including by addressing the increasing scourge of technology-facilitated gender-based violence. By working together, we can create a world that is defined not by stark inequalities but by rising opportunities - a world free of poverty for all. #InvestInWomen #SDG5 #genderequality

The GE is just over a week away and we are calling on the next UK Government to create a #FeministFuture. In advocating for global gender equality, the UK must also walk the talk at home, starting with Parliament. Currently, the system remains stacked against women - only 35% of MPs are women in a country where women make up 51% of the population. We want the next UK Government to: 🟠 Commit to a gender equal parliament by enacting Section 106 of the Equality Act. This would require all parties to publish diversity data on candidates standing for elections to the House of Commons, Scottish Parliament and the Senedd. #GenderEquality #Parliament #WomenPoliticians #Women
