The OpEd piece by Bill Miller (President, American Gaming Association) asking for federal action against illegal online gambling operators in the Pittsburgh-Tribune is spot on (see link). It's time for "the Feds" (Department of Justice and FBI) to take comprehensive action to block / disable illegal gambling sites that US players are accessing. The Feds were super effective at dismantling the illegal online prescription drug business in the 1990's. They can do the same for illegal online gambling sites and apps and help our industry protect players in the United States of America. https://lnkd.in/gb8mm7gp

Chris Cylke, vice president of government relations at the American Gaming Association (AGA), has pointed out that attractive promotions, better odds, and the ability to gamble with cryptocurrencies are some of the things that lure people into illegal gaming. Different aspects are included in illegal gaming such as offshore online casinos, unregulated slot machines and illicit sportsbooks. These hidden activities present significant threats to customers and undermine the legal gambling sector. However, Cylke further noted how important it is to educate consumers about the risks associated with these illegal platforms, reported local media outlet Vegas Inc. According to him, illegal gambling is not a victimless crime as many believe. Users may expose their personal and financial details to unregulated entities which could be located anywhere since there is no oversight over them and customers do not know where their money ends up. A groundbreaking study by Frontier Economics, commissioned by the Betting and Gaming Council (BGC), revealed that 1.5 million Brits are wagering up to an estimated £4.3 billion annually on illegal gambling platforms. This report is the first high-profile investigation into the black market since the UK government’s White Paper on gambling reform, revealing the increasing threat unregulated operators pose in the UK. The study found that illegal gambling operators are aggressively targeting UK consumers, subverting regulatory safeguards, and depriving both the government and the sports sector of significant revenues. The most concerning finding is how mainstream black-market sites have become among younger bettors: more than one in five people aged 18-24 years who gamble regularly now use unregulated platforms, accessing them via online messaging apps. Affiliates play a pivotal role in guiding consumers towards locally licensed and regulated operators, especially amidst recent scandals. This article from the LA Times underscores the importance of consumer protection in the betting industry. Regulated sportsbooks adhere to strict regulations, safeguarding against targeting vulnerable individuals and ensuring fair advertising practices. Conversely, unlicensed operators evade taxes and lack accountability for consumer protection laws. To bolster consumer protection, we propose these three solutions: 1. Affiliate qualification and licensing 2. Uniform regulations across state lines 3. Continued efforts to create a fair marketplace Let's prioritize consumer safety and integrity in the betting industry. #ConsumerProtection #RegulatedMarket #ResponsibleGaming https://lnkd.in/eqD-_JWe

#California Card Sharps. Tension between the Tribal gaming community and non-tribal Card Room operators in the Golden State is rising over controversial Senate Bill 549, posted by Senator Josh Newman. If passed, #SB549 will give Native American gambling operators the power to challenge under-the-table practices that allow #cardrooms to offer House and Bank betting to punters through the use of so-called Third-Party-Proposition Players. Card rooms, for their part, fear that the proposed bill will severely impact the #financialviability of their operations. It's complicated but a #fascinating update on gambling in California, nonetheless. #IllegalGambling - whose problem is it? Our CEO Ismail Vali tells iGamingBusiness of the growing threat of illegal gambling, and most importantly - what's being done and who is tackling the black market. Illegal operators thrive by offering "unbeatable value," but at a devastating cost to the legal, licensed and regulated industry. Here’s what’s at stake: 📉 Lost revenue: Illegal operators siphon profits away from legal gambling, undermining taxation, responsible gaming, and fair play. ⚠️ Vulnerable audiences: They prey on self-excluded players and even children, often targeting them through loopholes in platforms like GAMSTOP. ❌ Winners don't get paid: These operators cheat customers by refusing payouts and ignoring regulatory safeguards. 🛡️ The solution? All legal stakeholders from operators to law enforcement - must unite to stamp out illegal gambling and reclaim control of the marketplace. Yield Sec is leading the charge with data-driven actionable intelligence via comprehensive and military-grade monitoring to kick crime out of gambling. Ultimately, it's your problem.
