TSMC's 3nm chip manufacturing process is in high demand by tech giants Apple, Intel, and AMD. This is likely due to the upcoming launch of new products from these companies and their desire for the best performance possible. TSMC is expected to see a significant revenue increase, with 3nm chips potentially accounting for 20% of their total sales. Apple is expected to be the biggest user of TSMC's 3nm process, with plans to use it in their A18 Pro SoC and M4 chip. This close partnership makes sense considering Apple's history as TSMC's largest customer. Intel is also jumping on board, using the 3nm process for their upcoming Lunar Lake and Arrow Lake CPUs. Finally, AMD plans to utilize the 3nm process in their Zen 5 CPUs. We can expect to see these new products with TSMC's chips launch sometime in 2025. The high demand for TSMC's 3nm process indicates that it will be a major factor in the next generation of CPUs and SoCs. Not because I'm an Intel fan, but because competition is great for everyone. Intel was a dominant force in the CPU landscape for years, but then AMD caught up and now new players are starting to enter the fold, too. Intel is truly on the backfoot for the first time in a long, long time, and it wouldn't just be a fantastic comeback to launch an x86 processor that can go toe to toe with Arm; it would be a phoenix rising from the ashes." "There are a lot of questions with very few answers, and the biggest question mark at the top is efficiency. We'll need to wait and see, and while I'm excited to see Intel back at the top again, there's no doubt that the company has been pushing for some inconceivable achievements. While the company is on track to meet its ludicrous goals of "five nodes in four years," it's just yet another example of Intel suddenly playing catch up when compared to the rest of the industry." My gush, "phoenix rising," "ludicrous goals" ..... , what happened to Intel! I am far from an expert in CPU, GPU or NPU, and I don't play one on TV. I am simply asking: 1) Why is the MC of INTC only $140B vs. AMD's $245B (as of market close last Friday, 7/19/24)? and 2) Why does Intel have to farm out one of its most advanced chips to TSMC? This is scary stuff. In my 40 years of professional career, I saw the following tech power houses, who never rise from the ashes of phoenix (MC): Xerox ($1.5B), Kodak ($0.5B), Motorola's pager/cell phone BU's, Nokia's cell phone BU, Research in Motion ($1.4B). Intel used to be the most dominant player in CPU by a large margin, and we also know that Intel had tried but ended with not-much-to-write-home-about in memories, mobile computing, GPU and foundry business. One may argue, these were really too big for a single enterprise like Intel to chew and swallow, but CPU is the core business, right? I was with Motorola at the time, when a similar question was asked. Is Intel going to follow suit and fade into the sunset? That's the (2)^16 dollar question!

In processors today, all interconnects, whether they’re carrying power or data, are constructed on the “front side” of the chip, above the silicon substrate. Foveros and other 3D-chip-stacking tech require through-silicon vias, interconnects that drill down through the silicon to make connections from the other side. But back-side power delivery goes much further. It puts all of the power interconnects beneath the silicon, essentially sandwiching the layer containing the transistors between two sets of interconnects. FET change: In addition to back-side power, the chipmaker is switching to a different transistor architecture with the Intel 20A process: RibbonFET. A form of nanosheet, or gate-all-around, transistor, RibbonFET replaces the FinFET, CMOS’s workhorse transistor since 2011. With Intel 18A, Clearwater Forest’s logic dies will be made with a second generation of RibbonFET process. From Rock and a Hard Place to Strategic Advantage "Intel is expected to close the gap with Intel 20A, which it will use for this year's Arrow Lake desktop CPUs, and Intel 18A, which will be ready early next year. Panther Lake will use the Intel 18A process and is expected to launch sometime in 2025. Simply matching TSMC in manufacturing means AMD’s competitive edge will diminish." Intel is making significant strides in regaining its technical leadership, aiming to soon match TSMC, while simultaneously diminishing AMD's competitive advantage. This development is crucial for Intel’s strategic positioning in the next few years, in my perspective. "Becoming a foundry and a world-class one is a costly endeavour, but for now, Intel is rising to the challenge. Intel showed it is on track to reach its ambitious goal by the end of the decade." Many view being between TSMC and AMD for Intel as being between a rock and a hard place. However, Intel is rising to the challenge to meet both head-on as an integrated device manufacturer for the 21st century. In my opinion, through this strategy, Intel will be uniquely positioned once again reap the integrated benefits as a system foundry for the AI era. “By the looks of it, AMD’s edge over Intel is set to vanish… Intel seems to be on schedule with the execution of this monumental shift.
