Our latest article, published in partnership with OGCI (Oil and Gas Climate Initiative), identifies opportunities and enablers to spur #carbon utilization. It outlines four potential conversion pathways which could have global impact potential through to 2040, helping to develop the sector and increase CO2 utilization to an estimated 430 to 840 million tonnes a year by 2040. The overwhelming majority of #CCUS is net carbon positive. How’s that exactly? 💡Per Mongabay: “An estimated 83% of the world’s current #CCS capacity features compressed CO2 injected into the ground via pipelines to extract oil, a process called enhanced #oil recovery. Roughly 40% of that [injected] carbon leaks back into the atmosphere in the process“ 💡When you then consider that the oil produced with enhanced oil recovery releases 1.5 tons (or more) of CO2 for every ton of CO2 injected, #carboncapture starts to look less like a #climate #solution and a lot more like a scam. 🌍 Climate News: Germany Unveils Carbon Management Strategy 🌱 The German government unveiled key elements of its Carbon Management Strategy. Similar to the European Commission, Germany emphasized the need for carbon capture, storage, and utilization (CCUS) to achieve climate neutrality goals but acknowledges that the focus should be on hard-to or impossible-to-abate sectors. Key Takeaways from the Strategy: 🔍 State support prioritizes hard-to-abate sectors like lime, cement, and waste. 🏭 CCS is enabled for other industry sectors and gas power plants - coal power plants are excluded. 🌿 The strategy incorporates Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS), unlocking the potential for negative emissions in the power sector. However, further details will be outlined in the long-term strategy on negative emissions and the national biomass strategy. 💧 Captured CO2 is slated to be stored beneath the seabed; the pipeline network should be operated privately. Implications for Carbon Prices: 📈 Given Germany's significant emissions footprint in Europe, this strategy holds the potential to influence carbon price expectations. 💰 Support for CCS in hard-to-abate sectors could reduce medium- to long-term carbon prices by accelerating emission reductions at a lower cost. Industry claims it can continue to produce as much oil & gas as it wants to because Carbon Capture and Sequester will neutralize CO2 emissions. But at its full potential, CCS will only account for about 2.4% of the world’s carbon mitigation by 2030 https://lnkd.in/etJtk5Tg

A carbon credit certifies the permanent removal of one metric tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions (CO2e) from the atmosphere or a reduction in CO2e by the same amount. Understand what types of #CarbonCredit are available, and how to choose between them 👇

📢 InfluenceMap's latest report using #CarbonMajors database found 57 fossil fuel and cement producers linked to 80% of global fossil CO2 emissions since the #ParisAgreement. The findings reveal an astonishing disproportional share of #fossilfuel pollution across the globe. "InfluenceMap’s new analysis shows that this group is not slowing down production, with most entities increasing production after the Paris Agreement. This research provides a crucial link in holding these energy giants to account on the consequences of their activities,” said Daan Van Acker, Program Manager at InfluenceMap. In 2023, along its record contribution to global carbon emissions since the Paris Agreement, the oil and gas industry simultaneously continued to amass record profits at the expense of communities around the world, with the five super-majors reaching over $120bn windfall.
