March Matness Exercise 12 The Swan Dive stretches the abdominals, and strengthens the glutes and spinal extensors. It also teaches the Pilates principles of control and precision. ***Pilates is a progressive practice. The first progression in this video is ideal for the beginner or for individuals who have spinal injuries/issues. Once you become adept at the first progression, ease into the second progression. The second progression may not be appropriate for individuals with wrist and/or shoulder issues or for individuals who have spinal issues that may restrict the performance of backbends. The last progression is very advanced and should not be performed until the second progression is perfected. If the body is making a clunking feeling, that probably isn't the best path for that moment. So choose another route for that limb to move through. Studies have shown that the body responds best and is able to work with your current design rather than forcing a totally new position upon the anatomy.
