In an enlightening conversation at the 42nd annual JP Morgan Healthcare Conference, Emmanuel Frenehard, Sanofi's Chief Digital Officer, unveiled the pharmaceutical giant's ambitious AI strategy, underscoring a future where AI empowers innovation, efficiency, and patient care.
Sanofi categorizes AI into three distinct types:
- 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐝 𝐀𝐈, critical for research and innovation, creating a unique space for intellectual property. 🔬
- 𝐒𝐧𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐀𝐈, democratizing AI's power across the company, enhancing everyday decision-making. 📲
- 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐀𝐈, a new frontier exploring creative and regulatory document generation, promising to revolutionize patient care and operational efficiency. 🎨
Despite being in the early stages of leveraging generative AI, Sanofi envisions its impact across manufacturing, clinical studies, employee productivity, and content creation. This is a testament to AI's potential in not only streamlining processes but also in enhancing the creativity and efficiency of solutions provided to healthcare professionals and patients.
Frenehard also highlighted the importance of responsible AI—a framework ensuring AI's reliability, fairness, and eco-friendliness. This approach underscores the need for AI technologies to be transparent, accountable, and secure, aligning with ethical standards crucial for patient care and environmental sustainability. 🌍
The conversation also touched upon the challenges, including the risk of "hallucinations" or inaccuracies in AI-generated content, emphasizing the importance of human oversight and continuous validation to ensure clinical soundness.
As AI technologies evolve, the potential to dramatically shorten the distance between patients and treatments, particularly for rare diseases, becomes increasingly tangible. Generative AI, despite its nascent stage in healthcare, holds promise for early diagnosis, symptom detection, and ultimately, better patient outcomes.
As we stand on the brink of this transformative era, it is clear that AI will play a crucial role in shaping the future of healthcare, driving both operational excellence and improved patient care.

One of the reasons I decided to join Sanofi was the declarative investment that Sanofi had made on AI.
One of our strategic imperatives is "All in on AI" which enabled me to hit the ground running from Day 1. I didn't have to come in and convince our leaders to invest in it.
AI won't be a choice, it will just be a way of life for all of us and for that we all need to choose to embrace AI and decide what it means for us.
In your career if you don't choose to embrace AI in your own way, you won't be competing with AI for your job, you will be competing against the person next to you, who chose to embrace AI. You got this!

Over the last few years, and particularly in 2024, we’ve been forging ahead with our #AI agenda across our entire business with one global ambition in mind: to reduce the time from discovery to therapy.
AI in our industry means moving at faster speed, with greater precision. This is more than an industry transformation, it’s lifechanging for our patients.
Using three categories of AI, we’re able to propel our vision company-wide:
✔️ Expert AI
✔️ Snackable AI
✔️ Generative AI
We have made significant strides, and yet we’ve only scratched the surface of AI and our transformation of the practice of medicine. 🚀
Thank you, Forbes, for the opportunity to represent the collective work we do at Sanofi in the interest of patients👇
