I follow a really interesting and experienced American Vocal Coach Roger Love. Well worth a follow for anyone interested in communications. The other day he shared an experience from one of his students which I wanted to share in case it resonated with anyone. Many people are afraid to admit to a fear of public speaking as maybe it is a sign of weakness. They don't want anyone to know they are taking classes to overcome this fear when in fact this is one of the bravest things that you can do. 🤔What’s the point of paying for a coach if all they do is helping me find my own answers to my own questions? Surely, I can do that for myself by myself … 🫧… well, of course it would be wonderful if I could coach myself, all the time. 🤷🏼♀️ But I can’t. 🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️And I don’t think I will be able to do that when I will have completed my professional coaching diploma with Gothia Akademi either. 🚫 I have my own answers within me. But they are not always easily accessible to me. 🧚🏼♂️I am learning fantastically powerful tools to make answers accessible in others. And the magic happens when I can trust somebody else (i.e. a coach!) with the process and lean into accessing my own answers. 🎨🖌️There is a true art to coaching and it’s been a true delight to return to Gothia Akademi for the start of part 2 of my coaching education. When I taught English to college students, we'd read all of these incredible essays that amaaaazed me. But students were largely unimpressed. "Don't you see? Don't you understand how good this is??" I would implore, as if my conviction could make a difference. But they had no experiential lens or insight through which to evaluate an essay's complexity or craft. It's the #dunningkruger effect: People with low ability overestimate their competence. Conversely, the more you know, the more you begin to appreciate a subject's complexity. This same disconnect happens regarding coaching. It's so deceptively simple, and yet a great coach has invested years in their development and training to do it well.
