Yet there's been little effort to tackle these emissions in comparison to sectors of similar contribution. That's why the Enteric Fermentation Accelerator the GMH launched is so important. It has helped put a spotlight on the problem, and provided an opportunity for major funders to contribute to catalytic research to expand mitigation opportunities, lower costs, and bring benefits to farmers. Good to see Bezos Earth Fund contributing to such groundbreaking R&D create solutions like vaccines, improved genomics, or feed additives. On cattle farms, animal enteric fermentation releasing methane is the main contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Feed additives such as 3-nitrooxypropanol and Asparagopsis seaweed are one of the initial solutions commercialised to reduce cattle carbon footprint. However, these products face economic challenges in terms of logistics and scale-up. An emerging technology that does not face these constraints is ArkeaBio's vaccine. ArkeaBio aims to roll out their vaccine by 2028. This vaccine creates an immune response in cattle interfering with methanogens for several months. The technology is already attracting significant attention, winning the NovaUCD AgTechUCD Innovation Centre Start-Up Award at the 2023 Enterprise Ireland Innovation Arena Awards. The tech firm, founded by Jack Pilkington and Alan O Donovan, uses the ‘bovine breathalyser’, an innovative technology that measures emissions from animals, analysing the data to give a true picture of enteric ruminant emissions, which are estimated to account for up to 68% of agri-emissions. Their aim is to provide agri-focused researchers with data which can used to identify high- and low-emitting ruminants, test methane-reducing supplements and determine ways of cutting carbon dioxide and methane output through genetic, dietary and supplementary means without compromising dairy and beef yields. I am pleased to announce that our latest meta-analysis, titled "Effects of Distillers Dried Grains with Solubles (DDGS) on Enteric Methane Emissions in Dairy and Beef Cattle: A Meta-Analysis," has been accepted for publication in Frontiers in Veterinary Science! 📄🐄 In this study, we examined the impact of DDGS on methane emissions, addressing a critical issue in environmental sustainability within livestock production. This publication marks the beginning of our series focused on methane emissions and their quantification using advanced meta-analytic techniques. 🌍📊 Stay tuned as we continue exploring innovative ways to measure and reduce greenhouse gases in ruminants! 🐄 Conclusion: The findings suggest that the inclusion of DDGS does not significantly affect DMI, enteric CH4 production, or CH4 yield in cattle. Moreover, the EE content in DDGS-containing diets does not significantly influence CH4 outcomes. These results indicate that DDGS can be incorporated into cattle diets without exacerbating CH4 emissions, contributing to sustainable livestock feeding practices. 🚀 Further exciting news! 🚀 FOLIUM Science has recently been awarded two more grants through Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Farming Innovation Programme (FIP), delivered by Innovate UK. This will allow FOLIUM to continue to showcase the utility of our Guided Biotics technology to sustainably address major challenges within farming practices and to boost environmental resilience. Both awards allow us to continue to build our excellent relationship with the University of Bristol. 🦠 Campylobacter represents a major #onehealth challenge and zoonotic disease. Contaminated poultry is the number one cause of human infection; therefore, achieving "Campylobacter-free" status will secure a premium for poultry farmers. Currently the only effective controls are biosecurity measures and abattoir management that do not tackle the problem at its source. FOLIUM will develop innovative CRISPR/Cas based solutions (Guided Biotics) to address this unmet need in the sector and provide effective control of Campylobacter. 🌎💨 Ammonia is a highly caustic and irritating gas with major concerns for human health, animal welfare and productivity, and the ecological diversity of sensitive ecosystems such as our rivers and waterways. Agriculture is responsible for 88% of the UK's ammonia's emissions and livestock housing is a large contributor to this. Microbial enzymes, called ureases, are responsible for the rate-limiting step in ammonia production. Through this project, FOLIUM is harnessing its Guided Biotics platform to precisely modulate microbiomes and knockdown urease production. This demonstrates the capacity of our technology to mitigate troubling gases emitted in farming practices!
