Structure: When learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the dedication and approach of the instructors will play a crucial role in your progress and development. It’s not always that instructors lack methodology; sometimes they take the easy way out. They often have students repeat the same warm-up moves, followed by a few drills and techniques practiced countless times before. Instead of creating a structured class, it ends up just being another training session. Instructors might teach what they know well, rather than focusing on what students need to learn and understand. For beginners, this can be overwhelming and unproductive. New students need a step-by-step approach tailored to their lack of experience, rather than being thrown into routines as if they’ve been practicing Jiu-Jitsu for years. Think of it this way: in any technical pursuit, you wouldn’t be thrown into it on your first day. So why should it be any different in BJJ? Practice, after all, does not make perfect, it makes permanent. Properly planned and intentional instruction is essential, and instructors who aim to create an environment of continuous learning and skill-building experiences must go beyond mere training sessions. If the goal is to make people sweat until they want to pass out, perhaps a CrossFit facility would be more suitable (not to undermine CrossFit, as its intensity is by design and has its place). We need to ensure our classes are structured in a way that promotes growth, understanding, and progression for all students, regardless of their experience level. This thoughtful and methodical approach benefits the students and elevates the overall quality of the academy. When swimmers are working to execute great skills for longer periods of time, dropping in skill reminders can be a powerful way to maintain skills, all without disrupting the flow of training. That way, you get improvements in skill and fitness at the same time. A lot of swimmers struggle to hold their skills together during longer sets, and even more struggle to learn more effective skills during longer sets. By incorporating drills throughout the sets, swimmers can get reminders of what they need to be doing and how they need to do it. In this set, the focus is on maintaining excellent timing throughout. Before each longer swim, swimmers will perform underwater recovery to help them lock in that timing. If they lose it during the freestyle, they have another chance to get it back. We’ll also hold swimmers accountable to effective skills by requiring them to maintain their stroke count throughout. That way we develop and enhance skills without losing any of the training benefits.
