Opal Camera produces webcams that use machine learning and hardware to improve sound and image quality for video meetings and recordings. Opal was founded by Veeraj Chugh, who led product at Uber and Jump; Stefan Sohlstrom, a designer and product manager who’s worked at Plaid, Otto, and Uber Freight; and Kenny Sweet, an industrial designer who’s built products for Beats and Google. The first Opal webcam emerged from late-night tinkering sessions during the pandemic that uncovered a crucial insight: existing webcams relied on outdated technology, lacking the computational power for studio-quality video. This realization led the team to develop a webcam that combines advanced hardware with sophisticated software. Their diverse expertise allowed them to excel in both areas, resulting in a truly innovative product. Launched in 2021, the webcam was a huge success, demonstrating how reimagining a familiar object can lead to breakthrough solutions that resonate strongly with the needs of users as they evolve. Here’s why and how I see that hardware can offer the required outlier VC returns and fit into our model: 🔒 Unique MOAT: Hardware, paired with software, creates a robust barrier to entry, enabling solutions that pure software can't achieve. 🤝 Enhanced Stickiness: Installing a physical device creates a deeper commitment than a software subscription, leading to lower churn rates. The tailored experiences and direct value from these devices are hard to replace. 📊 Data Advantage: Hardware devices can enhance software capabilities by collecting valuable data, building a powerful data MOAT. What type of hardware investments are attractive to me as a boutique VC? Scalability: Hardware that is almost as scalable as software, meaning easy to ship and install. Service-Oriented Sales: Sold as a service with high blended software-like margins. Capital Efficiency: Low capex to enable capital-efficient scaling. 💡 For the skeptics, here are a few formerly VC-backed examples showcasing the potential for VC-returns in hardware/software businesses (not even mentioning Nvidia, Apple and the likes..): 🪹 Nest Labs: Smart home devices (thermostats, smoke detectors etc.). Acquired by Google for $3.2 billion in 2014. 🏃 Fitbit: Wearable fitness trackers and smartwatches. Acquired by Google for $2.1 billion in 2021. 🛎️ Ring: Smart doorbells and security cameras. Acquired by Amazon for over $1 billion in 2018. Listening to the NVIDIA earnings call this evening and with the Intuitive Machines rover planned to touch down on the moon tomorrow… I can’t help but feel completely inspired by the shift we are currently in. So much opportunity for seismic shifts in literally every corner of every industry. We’ll look back on this time in 10, 20 years with the same nostalgia that we look back at times before the internet, now. It’s a lot of fun using and developing this technology in typically ‘non digital’ companies. Will be interesting to see which ones end up being the Blockbusters of the 2020’s unable to shift fast enough or with too much remained focus on their original business model... and what new startups will bloom into the next Nvidias. 🚀 🌔
