Today the German Sachverständigenrat zur Begutachtung der gesamtwirtschaftlichen Entwicklung has published its Spring Report 2024, which also includes a chapter on sustainable freight transport. I am pleased that the majority of experts see the roll-out of charging infrastructure for fully electric commercial vehicles as an essential lever for low-emission transportation. A demand that we at MAN Truck & Bus SE have also been calling for a long time. What is needed now is full power in the expansion of the charging infrastructure and the reinvestment of significant amounts of the high additional revenue from the truck toll in a climate-friendly transformation of the transport and logistics industry. The next 2-3 years are crucial for the ramp-up. The charging infrastructure just can be realized immediately, if the additional revenue from the truck toll is used for this purpose. Otherwise electric trucks cannot make an important contribution to reducing CO2 emissions in the transport sector! To decarbonize road freight transport, our focus remains on battery-powered electric vehicles. These currently have clear advantages over other drive concepts in terms of energy efficiency and operating and energy costs and can best serve the vast majority of our customers' transport applications in the future. However, trucks such as our recently presented small series of the MAN hTGX, which are powered by hydrogen combustion engines, are a useful addition for special applications and markets. Simplicity. According to my colleague Roy Zakrzewski, this is what is needed for hydrogen to play an important role in decabonizing road freight transport in the future. Simplicity is what helps our customers to fulfill their daily business. Simplicity is needed to earn money with climate-friendly hydrogen drives. More precisely: simplicity in regulation and taxation. It is clear that although the electric drive is the prime path for us MAN Truck & Bus SE, the H2 drive is a sensible solution, especially in extreme heavy-duty applications or in regions with particularly challenging topography or climate. And with our H2 combustion engine hTGX, we have a production-ready product on the road. Roy represented MAN Truck & Bus SE on the panel discussion "The Role of Hydrogen in Decarbonising heavy-dutry vehicle road transport" and discussed together with ACEAs Thomas Fabian, Axel Volkery of European Commission and Laurent Conceel of Hydrogen Europe, what is needed, to explore the future of hydrogen as a climate friendly fuel choice in our B2B market. Solaris Bus & Coach has secured an order for 20 hydrogen-powered buses from Regionalverkehr Köln GmbH, a prominent public transport operator based in Cologne. Among the ordered buses, nine are Urbino 12 hydrogen buses with a length of 12 meters, while the remaining eleven are articulated Urbino 18 hydrogen buses. Currently, Cologne already boasts 46 Solaris hydrogen buses, with an additional 18 vehicles in the production and delivery phase. The delivery of the newly ordered buses is slated for the first half of 2025. The European market for electric, hybrid, & gas-powered buses grew by 41% in 2023, jumping from 9,543 to 13,466 units sold, according to figures published by CME Chatrou Solutions. Alternative-driveline buses made up a whopping 89% of all bus registrations. Of the 15,142 buses sold in 2023, 6,354 were battery electric vehicles - nearly 42%! MAN Truck & Bus SE and Solaris Bus & Coach pipped former market leader Yutong to the post, taking the number 1 and 2 slots with shares of 12.4% and 11.4% in electric bus sales respectively. The UK remains Europe's largest electric bus market, with 1,206 registrations - some 19% of the total - reported by CME Chatrou. Northern Irish manufacturer Wrightbus was the fourth best-selling manufacturer of electric buses, with 469 units registered (7.4% of the market). Today, we received important funding from Germany’s Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) and the states of Baden-Württemberg and Rheinland-Pfalz. The support marks an important step towards the series production of fuel cell trucks. It enables us to develop a next generation of our GenH2 Truck and produce a first batch of 100 units.   🚛 🚌 Why do we need hydrogen in the transport sector?  At Daimler Truck, we believe in two technologies for sustainable road freight transportation: battery-electric and hydrogen-powered drives. Because powering all of today's diesel trucks with green electricity alone won’t work. At one point, there will be limitations to the power grid. That’s why we need hydrogen as a second energy source. And: Building up both infrastructures, for batteries and hydrogen, is actually faster and less capital-intensive. Bring back Go Ultra Low... It was Edmund V King OBE, President of the AA, who suggested it at last week's BVRLA conference that I chaired, but the more I've been thinking about it, the more I think it's essential that some sort of government and industry joint venture is recreated to promote the switch to electric vehicles - just when it's needed most. As well as the BVRLA conference last week, I went to the excellent EV SUMMIT in Oxford where many of the same themes and issues were discussed. One of the highlights of both events was Vicky Read, CEO of ChargeUK, speaking about the huge growth in the public charging network, backed up by Toddington Harper from GRIDSERVE . Yet the public perception is that the charging infrastructure is still a big barrier for adoption of EVs. Go Ultra Low was funded by Government, car makers, energy providers and Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Now you can add in the public charging companies and, perhaps, Auto Trader UK, which seems to sponsor every event I go to these days and has fantastic data supporting the EV switch. Get Ginny Buckley to run the new Go Electric and be the face of the campaign to right the wrongs of the myths and misinformation that's still putting so many people off. With the government's commitment to ban the sale of new internal combustion-engined vehicles from 2030 again rather than 2035 – and the ever-tightening ZEV mandate still firmly in place – the time for action is now! Let's hope Louise Haigh MP at the Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom and Ed Miliband at Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, which oversee the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles, see the benefit in promoting EVs to buyers with fair, balanced and trusted information. Future Roads Minister Lilian Greenwood has reiterated the Government’s commitment to phase out the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030. Giving the opening speech at Cenex Expo, the MP for Nottingham South gave a speech on the benefits of cleaner, greener transport. Ms Greenwood highlighted the benefits of electric vehicles (EVs) and set out what the Government will do to support the industry. She said: “Our commitments to the EV sector are simple, they boil down to two things. “First, we will phase out new cars that rely solely on internal combustion engines by 2030. Second, we will expedite every effort to accelerate the rollout of charge points across the country. Together, they mean less carbon and more clean energy; fewer polluting cars and more electric vehicles – reducing the burden on our planet and increasing the opportunities for everyone to join in the electric vehicle revolution. “To do that and to be the difference makers we have to build a scaffold of certainty around those opportunities. Here’s how we’re going to do it – starting with providing certainty and delivering a zero emission vehicle mandate. By 2030 there will be no new cars relying solely on internal combustion engines. That’s the headline on the poster – print it in bold – 2030. An end date not only gives industry the clarity it needs, but also gives consumers the certainty they deserve.
