Mamoon Sbeih, APCO President for the Middle East & North Africa, highlighted recent extreme weather events in Dubai and Mumbai as stark examples of the growing climate crisis. The year 2024 has been particularly severe, with numerous extreme weather events worldwide. I can quickly add a couple more extreme events off the top of my head: Heatwaves in countries like the Philippines, Thailand, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia, flooding in Brazil, Kenya and Houston, USA.
Despite growing awareness of climate change, there is a significant gap in public perception regarding the actions taken by businesses and governments to address it. It’s time to improve communication and take decisive action on climate change.
The Climate Action Confidence Tracker (https://lnkd.in/dk-JmCDr), conducted by the #APCO Insight team, found that the language used by companies to communicate their climate actions often fails to resonate with the public. Many people find climate-related communications confusing and are unsure about who is actually taking meaningful action. Our study also showed that social media and company websites are key sources of information on climate action, and the private sector is seen as crucial in solving the climate challenge.
To address these issues, Mamoon Sbeih suggests five key actions for communicators:
1- Use simple, relatable language and visual techniques.
2- Be transparent about progress and challenges.
3- Launch initiatives to deepen understanding and empower action.
4- ...
Despite the challenges, there is optimism that global net-zero targets can be achieved by 2050. I share this optimism and believe that we can make significant progress if we work together! 🌍 How can we prepare our infrastructure for a +4°C future?
Cities, which will house over two-thirds of the world’s population by 2050, are at the heart of our adaptation to climate risks. With increasingly marked and intense climate hazards, how can buildings become more resilient?
💬 “When we talk about buildings, global warming is most often raised under the heading of "mitigation", i.e. the idea of reducing emissions. “But reflecting on ‘resilience’ means thinking in terms of adjustment, i.e. limiting the vulnerability of infrastructure. The two approaches are intertwined but also complementary.” Nicolas Dumas, Environmental Project Manager.
