Here is a #lightbulb moment: I’ve seen some videos by “experts” claiming that a #chatGPT query consumes 10X more energy than a #Google search. Or as much as a light bulb being lit for 10 min. With OpenAI’s announcement of GPTsearch yesterday to compete with Perplexity and Google’s #Gemini, I think it’s worth examining whether this is true. A typical incandescent light bulb: ~60 watts (0.06 kW) Energy (kWh) = Power (kW) × Time (hours) For 10 minutes (which is 1/6 of an hour): 0.06 kW x 1/6 hrs = 0.01 kWh A typical LED light bulb: ~10 watts (0.01 kW) LED: 0.01 kW X 1/6 hrs = 0.00167 kWh ➡️ A typical chatGPT query consumes 0.0004kw, which is less than a light bulb burning for 10 min. But when you compare it to Google search, the claim of a chatGPT query taking 10 times more energy is more of an outlier. I suppose it is plausible when you consider extreme cases of higher estimates of GpT queries and lower estimates of Google search. As the graph below shows, the more typical and realistic cases show that a ChatGPT query consumes about 4x more energy than a Google search. That is not to say that #AI models are not a huge energy hog given the nature and quantum of queries, that is already becoming an environmental nightmare. #GenAI models consume more energy due to the intensive computations required by their large neural network models during inference driving higher cooling requirements in the data centers. In contrast, #Google #Search is more energy-efficient, leveraging decades of optimization, pre-built indexing, and highly efficient algorithms to quickly retrieve and rank search results. #searchwars #sustainability #energy

The search function on ChatGPT is no longer new... but this is. They are coming hard for Google. By they, I mean Microsoft. Bing never was going to get the mass adoption it needed to cause an issue for Google but you know what is... OpenAI. You know who has invested $13B in OpenAI since 2019? Microsoft. You know what search engine OpenAI runs off? Bing You know who is replacing Siri across the Apple Eco-system? OpenAI Guess that makes Bing the fastest-growing search engine overnight and no one even knows they are using it. I think this will cause a seismic shift in how Google develops its search function. Layouts will change. Ads will change. I would also bet they will make a poor attempt at integrating voice search into the experience. The next 6 months will be spicy.

Shortly after Meta’s weights for its first Llama model leaked, a memo from a Google researcher leaked flagging the potential risks Google faced from open source technology. A few things have changed since then! Google has since built out this strategy of developing both open source models and competitors for major model providers like OpenAI and Anthropic with its Gemini series (one of which topped the more trendy of the leaderboards lately). And it’s also built out a product for enabling those open source models for potential Google cloud users—including Gemma and beyond. (Google’s latest micro-version of Gemma 2 also topped a leaderboard for models in its class). Setting aside how everyone feels about leaderboards, Google’s standing with its AI tools feels a far cry from when it seemed to be constantly tripping over itself after the launch of ChatGPT. Many of the techniques that researcher detailed—low rank adaptation, shrinking through quantization for low-power inference, and on-device inference—turned out to be exactly where the industry was headed. And more specifically, practically all of it ended up in some form of its forthcoming AI tools in Apple Intelligence. Google has yet to transform any of this into consumer products, which while search stands to be “disrupted” still seems quite a ways away given the cash it generates. But it’s also developed a kind of full developer stack that goes all the way from the bare metal, through developer frameworks (JAX and XLA), and up to the point of inference especially with its new CPU product. And it’s able to potentially do all this without rull reliance on Nvidia while sitting on one of the largest and most powerful pools of data available in the world. So, while we might have written off Google after the launch of its ill-fated search product Bard, it for once feels like it might have snuck up on us in its competency in developer tools in AI. Of course this has happened before several times—like MapReduce and TensorFlow—but it’s possible Google’s learned its lesson since then and will find a way to keep its competitors and peers from racing off with its foundational technology and leaving it in the dust. #google #ai #openai https://lnkd.in/gDHRpWgD

🚨 OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Search: Here's What You Need to Know The Search game is about to get even more disrupted with both Perplexity and now SearchGPT coming for Google and I'm loving it. Was about damn time... Not because I have something against Google, on the contrary, but because ultimately normal folks will benefit most from the competition and also, even though they continue to innovate at lightspeed, it's safe to say we all probably got a bit of Google Fatigue over the years. OpenAI moved the position of its content bar couple of weeks ago, putting it in the middle of the screen, just like Google Search bar, signaling" this release. Here's a quick breakdown: ✨ Key Features: - Real-time web browsing capability - Source citation integration - Lightning-fast response times - Chrome extension for seamless browsing 🔍 Initial Observations: - Currently exclusive to ChatGPT Plus subscribers - Combines ChatGPT's familiar interface with Perplexity-style source attribution - Features visual previews of source websites - Demonstrates impressive speed improvements 💡 Pro Tip: While the Chrome extension option is available, I recommend waiting for a few updates before making it your default search engine. 📅 What's Next: OpenAI plans to roll this out to all users in the coming months, democratizing access to this powerful search capability. Did you give it a spin yet? What's you experience? #AI #ChatGPT #TechNews #OpenAI #Innovation #DigitalTransformation

😨 Google AI generates wrong code! I searched Google for "golang time to long month name" and got this suggestion. This code won't compile and run (try it out: https://lnkd.in/eUj88Z7p). It's a very disappointing result from Google for such a simple task. Looks like it understands the syntax but not the actual API ChatGPT on the other hand generates the right solution (https://lnkd.in/egqDkU6B)!

Yesterday was about ads in LLMs, today it's all about search engines! OpenAI is launching a new online search engine powered by ChatGPT, positioning it as a direct competitor to Google. A leak suggests that the search engine will go live next week at search.chatgpt.com. The site currently shows a "not found" message but is secured with SSL, indicating that the subdomain is prepped and ready for use. The search engine is likely to use a RAG (Retriever-Augmented Generation) architecture. This means that it will pull in knowledge from the underlying LLM (ChatGPT3.5 and 4-Turbo) as well as Bing's search results through its API. In my view, it's only a matter of time before AI threatens Google's search dominance, with a decrease in its traffic. Just at the end of 2023, Google's traffic was down by 0.4%, while traffic to Bard (Google's too), Bing, and ChatGPT increased by 2%, 8%, and 4%, respectively. #OpenAI #ChatGPT #SearchEngine #AICompetition

Google vs. Microsoft: Buckle Up! The Search War is Back, and it's Wild! Remember the epic clash between Coke and Pepsi in the soda wars? Well, buckle up because there's a new showdown happening, and the stakes are even higher. Google, the absolute king of search, is staring down a major challenger: the tag-team of Microsoft and OpenAI, armed with the crazy-smart AI LLM, ChatGPT. Imagine search engines like they're old cars. Google's been that classic, reliable ride – sure, it gets the job done, but it's starting to feel a little dated, you have to sort through all the information to find the underlying information of what you have been looking for. Now, Microsoft and OpenAI are revving up their souped-up hotrod, promising to change how we get around the web. ChatGPT isn't just spitting out links anymore, often being sorted out by who pays more; it's giving you full-on answers, even writing you sources if you ask nicely. For years, Alphabet had the comfy throne for Google, raking in cash from those little ads next to your search results. But what happens when those results aren't just a list anymore? What if you were given a sensible and comprehensive answer? What if you can chat up the answer you need? Will Google reinvent itself and stay the king, or will Microsoft and OpenAI's risk-taking AI gamble pay off? Only time will tell. Get those bets ready, because this is shaping up to be one wild ride. For those not sure go long on both Microsoft and Alphabet, at worst they will average out, but both are cash machines now. #Innovation #AI #ArtificialIntelligence #FutureofWork #Business #SEO #SearchEngines #ML #NLP #BigData #ChatGPT #FutureOfWork #Disruption #TechNews #BusinessTrends #Google #Microsoft #OpenAI

OpenAI has introduced a new search feature within ChatGPT, positioning the AI startup to rival search engines like Google, Microsoft’s Bing, and Perplexity. Launched on Thursday, ChatGPT search delivers real-time sports scores, stock quotes, news, weather, and more, through partnerships with news and data providers. The feature, named SearchGPT, has been in beta since July. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and VP of Engineering Srinivas Narayanan emphasized the natural, intuitive search experience that allows users to ask follow-up questions like in a conversation. This development could challenge Google’s dominance and impact Microsoft, despite its significant investment in OpenAI. Currently available to ChatGPT Plus, Team users, and SearchGPT waitlist members, the feature will soon roll out to Enterprise, Edu, and free users. OpenAI's recent funding round values the company at $157 billion, despite projected losses. However, its transition to a for-profit structure has stirred some controversy. #OpenAI #ChatGPTSearch #AI #Google #Microsoft #Bing #TechNews #ArtificialIntelligence #SearchEngine #Innovation #SamAltman #TechUpdate

Forget the AI hype. The real war is for developers' hearts and minds, and Microsoft is still winning. I saw a lot more than an electric DeLorean at Google I/O. There were impressive AI advancements, but also developers struggling to keep up. Meanwhile, Microsoft's deep enterprise roots and developer-friendly approach with OpenAI give them the edge. Google may have the tech, but they're fighting the wrong battle. It's time they remember: developers, developers, developers! #Google #Microsoft #GOOGL #MSFT #OpenAI #ChatGPT #Gemini
