Malgosia Zegar’s Post

This year’s Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) Conference in Washington, D.C., has been an outstanding platform for addressing the critical challenges in anti-corruption and compliance. One key takeaway for me: While new risks—relating to national security, trade compliance, and sanctions—are emerging and evolving rapidly, there’s a notable convergence with established topics like anti-corruption. As one panelist aptly put it: “It’s a familiar conversation on a different subject.” The message is clear: build on the foundation of your compliance program, but stay vigilant and prepared for the rapidly changing expectations of regulators. In this space, there’s little room for error. Another highlight was the emphasis on collaboration between business and compliance functions, which is essential to proactively "demystify compliance" before challenges arise. Whether it’s navigating high-risk deals or staying ahead of enforcement trends, breaking down silos has never been more important. Finally, the conference reinforced how unpredictable today’s landscape is, demanding both agility and simplification of compliance approaches. Leveraging data and AI is no longer optional—it’s key to driving effective compliance management. A big thank you to the organizers, speakers, and participants for fostering thought-provoking discussions!
