All Rise, representing a coalition of human rights and environmental justice organisations including MCEJO, GET, MACUA, ActionAid SA, SAHRDN, African Conservation Trust, and SA Conservation Fund, has submitted extensive comments on Tendele Mining's Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for new mining areas in KwaZulu-Natal. Our comprehensive analysis reveals critical issues with the EIA: 1. Inadequate public participation: Meetings were "meaningless for sharing details of the EIA report." Critical information was omitted. 2. Apparent bias: The EIA consultants provided information favoring Tendele Mining, contradicting specialist reports and downplaying community impacts. 3. Misleading information: Multiple discrepancies between the EAP's statements and specialist findings, particularly on environmental impacts and mitigation. 4. Impact significance contradictions: The EAP claimed mitigation would reduce all impacts to minor/negligible, but the Impact Assessment Summary shows most remain high or medium. 5. Underestimated impact zones: Specialist studies indicate severe effects up to 4km away, far beyond the 500m relocation zone. 6. Inadequate relocation planning: No Relocation Action Plan exists for Emalahleni and Ophondweni, despite claims to the contrary. Specific examples of misinformation: - Acid generation potential misrepresented - Blasting impact distances significantly underreported (800m vs. 4km) - Fly rock risks downgraded without justification Janice Tooley, Director of All Rise: "The EIA report contains numerous inaccuracies and omissions that appear to downplay the project's environmental and social impacts – it is a classic sweetheart report." Kirsten Youens, All Rise: "The entire EIA process... has been typical of Tendele's dismissive and disrespectful approach to the community. The Scoping and EIA have been done in a way to present a voluminous paper trail of compliance but without any meaningful attempt to right the wrongs of the past." We're calling for a comprehensive review and revision of the EIA before any decisions on expanding Tendele's mining operations in Emalahleni, Ophondweni, and Mahujini. It's crucial to protect the rights and well-being of affected communities and the environment in Mpukunyoni, KwaZulu-Natal. #EnvironmentalJustice #CommunityRights #ResponsibleMining #KwaZuluNatal #EIA #TendeleMining Watch the interview by SABC with Janice Tooley here: https://lnkd.in/d_fJWRTM

Troika Management Corp., along with partners Spayum Holdings and PR Petroleum, are excited to announce another important milestone in the development of Gateway 286 in Merritt, BC. The Development Permit Application submission marks a significant milestone in over 30 years of collaboration and planning, promising a transformative impact on the region. This development is a testament to the collaborative partnership between Troika, Spayum Holdings, and PR Petroleum, deeply respecting the historical and cultural heritage of the Nicola Valley indigenous nations, while being a participant in economic and cultural reconciliation. Renee Merrifield, CEO of Troika, emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating, "This project goes beyond development; it's a step towards economic reconciliation and honoring the legacy of the Nicola Valley nations. We are dedicated to creating a space that embodies the values of the local Indigenous communities while fostering economic growth for Merritt. This partnership is a shining example of how we can build a future based on respect and shared prosperity." The development aligns with Merritt’s Official Community Plan Development Area 2 Urban Village, focusing on sustainability and innovative design. Key features include architecture inspired by local and indigenous design, accessible public spaces fostering community interaction, energy management, water conservation, and a lower environmental footprint. The landscape design incorporates natural plant selections, rain gardens, and geometries inspired by indigenous art, creating vibrant public areas that encourage engagement with the natural environment. https://lnkd.in/dWEC537r Citizens for Fungi Diversity - Project introduction on SEEN 2024 We are in the sixth mass extinction, where animal and plant species are going extinct at an alarming rate. Certainly, fungi are no exception, but shockingly little knowledge is available. In the IUCN Red list, there are two orders of magnitude less fungi than animals or plants. The conservation status is not evaluated, and the extinction risk of the species of the second-largest kingdom of life is unknown. According to IUCN, it is an under-researched and under-financed field. As a research officer of a conservation NGO, I would like to present a running project that aims to build infrastructure supporting citizen science activity of fungi diversity assessment.
